When discussing this week’s game vs. the Vikings, Steelers’ HC Mike Tomlin brought up Anthony Richardson and the Colts.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson caught some unexpected shade from Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin on Wednesday.
The Steelers face the Minnesota Vikings this week, who will be starting Carson Wentz while JJ McCarthy is out. As Tomlin was discussing the difference in playing a backup quarterback who operates more from the pocket, he brought up Richardson and the Steelers’ 2024 matchup with the Colts.
“I don’t necessarily view it as a negative thing for the Minnesota Vikings, at least in the short term, that Carson is playing for them,” Tomlin said via Bleacher Report. “We were in a similar situation a year ago; we were playing in Indianapolis. Man, and I commented to the guys, ‘Keep [Anthony] Richardson upright. Don’t put [Joe] Flacco in the game.’ And you know, Flacco ended up in the game.”
I believe the point that Tomlin was making was that he would prefer to face an inexperienced quarterback rather than an experienced veteran.
In that Colts vs. Steelers game that Tomlin referenced, Richardson would have just four pass attempts before exiting the game early due to an injury.
Filling in for him at that point was Joe Flacco, who didn’t exactly stuff the stat sheet, completing 16-of-26 passes for 168 yards and two scores, but the Colts did end up winning this game.
Flacco is now starting in Cleveland, while Richardson is the Colts’ backup quarterback after Daniel Jones won the competition over the summer.
Led by Jones, the Colts are 3-0 and have one of the most productive offenses in football this season.
