Is Bill Belichick’s coaching career coming to an end?
College football season in Chapel Hill took a turn for the worse last Saturday, when UNC lost 38-10 to preseason ACC favorite Clemson.
This result continued showcasing North Carolina’s inability to play competitively with Power Four programs. The Tar Heels lost 48-14 to TCU in their season opener, won consecutive games against Charlotte and Richmond, then lost by 25 at UCF.
Is UNC head football coach Bill Belichick in way over his head? On his Thursday edition of First Take, host Stephen A. Smith thinks the end is near for Belichick’s storied coaching career.
“Sadly, it appears that it’s time to eulogize Bill Belichick,” Smith said. “Tom Brady departs, then New England dissipates, they diminish before our very eyes. Then, Belichick ultimately gets booted out of New England. It’s time for a change. Then, there were NFL openings and nobody wanted to bring him on board. Because he couldn’t get an opportunity, he goes to college. And we go there, we see Michael Jordan and Lawrence Taylor show up for Opening Night of his college football coaching career – and they get trounced by TCU. We have gone – in a matter of five years – from talking about this man being one of the greatest ever, to asking who the hell is going to want him. It’s bad. It’s that bad.”
Belichick won eight Super Bowls during his time in the NFL, six coming as the Patriots’ head coach. It doesn’t look like Belichick will win many more games this fall in Chapel Hill, despite an “easy” schedule offset by early-season ACC surprises.
North Carolina shouldn’t pull the plug on Belichick just yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a new head coach leading the Tar Heels next fall. Belichick is still a great coach, but like Stephen A. said, Belichick is not “that guy” anymore.
