  • NFL Thursday night preview: Winless Dolphins face a tough task against Bills

NFL Thursday night preview: Winless Dolphins face a tough task against Bills

If the Miami Dolphins are at least competitive against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, we’ll be spared the Mike McDaniel hot seat talk.

On the flip side, if the Dolphins get blown out you’ll hear plenty about McDaniel’s future the rest of the week.

The Dolphins are off to a rough start at 0-2, and they’re not getting any favors this week with a game against the Buffalo Bills, who look like the best team in the AFC. The Bills came back to beat the Ravens in Week 1 and then demolished the Jets in Week 2. Josh Allen looks like he can win another MVP award. Buffalo is clearly a Super Bowl contender.

The Dolphins are closer to contending for the first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft than a Super Bowl. Miami’s defense has been one of the worst in the league and the offense has been up and down. The Dolphins are 0-2 and after a bad 2024 season and rough offseason, there is already speculation about what Miami’s next moves might be. If Miami loses big on a prime-time stage, the speculation about major changes will be accelerated.

    Who needs it more?

While it’s tough to say if it’s is Bills or Dolphins, the actual answer is probably “Mike McDaniel.” The Bills, with eyes on the No. 1 seed in the AFC this season, wouldn’t exactly be thrilled to lose a home game against a clearly inferior Dolphins team. Miami is already in bad shape at 0-2, and an 0-3 start would practically mean they’re already playing out the string before September is even over. So both teams need this win in their own way, but McDaniel’s immediate future might look bleak if the Dolphins don’t at least compete.

Key player: Bills RB James Cook

Cook wanted a raise after a nice 2024 season, and got it after holding in. Through two games he’s again looking like one of the NFL’s most productive backs. In Week 1 Cook had 102 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. In Week 2 he had 132 rushing yards and two touchdowns. If the game goes as expected, the Bills won’t need Josh Allen to pass it too often. The Dolphins are horrendous against the pass, but game script probably indicates that Cook should have plenty of opportunities and a chance for a huge game. However, this is the 2025 Dolphins defense and it’s possible the Bills put up big numbers passing and running it on Thursday night.

Betting market watch, by Ben Fawkes

Josh Allen has beaten the Dolphins in all seven regular-season meetings at home, going 4-3 against the spread. With injuries on defense for Miami, this one could get ugly — even though there has been some sharp action grabbing the Dolphins at +12.5, which is the line at BetMGM. The Dolphins are 0-2 ATS and the Bills are 2-0 ATS, which helps explain why the betting public is all over Buffalo tonight despite the massive spread.

Buffalo is a big favorite on Thursday night, but divisional games often have a way of being surprisingly competitive. Here are three fantasy angles to watch for:

Can Tyreek Hill make a splash play? The Dolphins finally hit on a long pass to Hill last week, his first grab over 30 yards in a calendar year. If Miami continues to struggle, it’s possible Hill is auditioning for his next team.

Is there a target hog in Buffalo? Keon Coleman had a breakout game in Week 1, but no Buffalo pass catcher got past 47 yards last week. Remember, despite Josh Allen’s MVP season, Mack Hollins led this team in touchdown catches last year with a modest five.

Is De’Von Achane the best pass-catching RB in the league? Achane was an occasional receiver as a rookie before spiking last year, but in 2025 the receiving production has been ridiculous (he’s on a pace for 94-952-17). The Miami offense likes quick throws, and Achane can make any defender miss.

  • What is wrong with LSU football’s offense?

What is wrong with LSU football’s offense?

LSU football ranks dead last in the SEC in points per game. That’s not a sentence anyone expected to utter in 2025. With quarterback Garrett Nussmeier returning with an elite group of wide receivers, LSU was projected to light up the scoreboard.

    That’s not what’s happened.

Through three games, LSU has just five touchdowns. LSU can’t establish the run game and Nussmeier has been inconsistent.

The assumption is that LSU will figure it out. The offensive line is still learning how to play together and Nussmeier is dealing with a lingering torso injury from fall camp. When LSU gels up front and Nussmeier gets healthy, it could suddenly click. But there’s some real issues with this unit right now.

LSU plays Southeastern on Friday. LSU has a massive talent edge vs. an FCS opponent and it shouldn’t take much for LSU to score points. But SEC play will ramp up in Week 5 when LSU travels to Ole Miss. LSU needs to have the offense figured out soon.

Today, we’ll take a look at what is wrong with LSU’s offense and how the Tigers can fix it.

Why has LSU struggled to run the ball?

LSU’s run game fell flat vs. Louisiana Tech and Florida. The Tigers had the occasional explosive run, but there was no down-to-down consistency. With 3.2 yards per carry, LSU ranks No. 15 in the SEC. It’s hard to pinpoint a single issue that’s prevented LSU from establishing the ground game — scheme, playcalling, and a lack of execution all have something to do with it.

LSU’s go-to run play is wide zone, but LSU hasn’t executed it

Wide zone is LSU’s run play of choice thus far, but it hasn’t worked. LSU ran some wide zone in 2024 to mixed results. The concept has been even less efficient in 2025.

When wide zone works, it really works. Some of the best offenses in the history of the NFL were built around the play. But it’s not an easy one to execute. It takes a certain personnel and a heavy amount of practice. The play intends to create horizontal movement, leading to vertical running lanes.

The horizontal stretch starts with the tackles. LSU isn’t getting what it needs from Davis at right tackle. Here’s a play from the Louisiana Tech game where Davis gets beat and Zavion Thomas gets tackled in the backfield.

Here’s a clip where LSU gets bailed out by Thomas making a play, but the blocking issues are still there. Davis gets beat again. Louisiana Tech threw a lot at LSU with different linebacker alignments and movement on the defensive line, but a Group of Five team shouldn’t win vs. LSU up front like Tech did.

The interior offensive line is still finding its way, too. LSU’s guards struggled to block Florida. The Gators have some good players, but Florida’s Caleb Banks completely sheds Josh Thompson here. This happened quite a few times vs. LSU’s entire interior offensive line in Week 3.

How does LSU fix the run game?

We can take the glass half full of half empty approach. Let’s start with the optimistic view.

The glass-half-full narrative goes like this. LSU’s offensive line is young with five new starters. These players are talented, but they’re still figuring out how to play together. With some more reps, we’ll see the line create more effective double teams and get better at communicating vs. exotic alignments and defensive line movement.

Braelin Moore is a decent center and left tackle Tyree Adams has shown flashes. Redshirt freshman Coen Echols is still developing and could be good enough to claim a starting spot by late October.

    Here’s the glass-half-empty view.

Adams, Davis, and Paul Mubenga are all struggling with fundamentals. It’s not a scheme or design issue — LSU just can’t execute the blocks vs. SEC defenders. Josh Thompson was highly touted as a transfer, but has yet to meet the hype. Moore managed to play vs. Florida, but he didn’t look nearly as good as he did vs. Clemson. It’s hard to fix this many execution issues during the season, especially with a line this young.

LSU has two options: Fix wide zone or find something else to run. At this point, LSU seems committed to making wide zone work. For better or worse.

When LSU hired Alex Atkins as run game coordinator, some thought LSU would make counter its featured run. Atkins built his Florida State offense around counter runs. LSU has looked OK running counter thus far, but the sample size is small. If wide zone continues to be a problem, expect to see more counter mixed in.

The passing game isn’t there yet either

LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier is averaging just 6.5 yards per attempt, ranking near the bottom of the SEC. Not great considering LSU entered the year with Heisman hopes for its quarterback.

The struggles vs. Clemson were understandable. Clemson has NFL-level corners and covered LSU on the outside. It was LSU’s first game with a new offensive line and LSU played it safe, asking Nussmeier to get the ball out quick rather than searching for the downfield shot.

But the aerial attack didn’t open up vs. Louisiana Tech either. The Bulldogs found success dropping eight defenders into coverage, taking away passing windows. Nussmeier was inaccurate, which didn’t help.

22.5% of Nussmeier’s attempts have been screen passes. The only SEC QB who throws screens at a higher rate is Georgia’s Gunner Stockton. But LSU is only averaging 5.6 yards per attempt on screens — not efficient enough to be throwing them at that high a rate. LSU hasn’t found much success on play action either, with Nussmeier ranking No. 16 among SEC QBs in play action yards per attempt.

LSU needs to find a way to stretch the field on the outside. Aaron Anderson and Zavion Thomas have been productive in the slot, but LSU’s offense won’t take the next step until Barion Brown and Chris Hilton Jr. are creating big plays down the field.

Brown got behind the defense on the first play vs. Louisiana Tech, but Nussmeier’s throw was off and the ball was intercepted. We’re yet to see the offense sync up.

Brian Kelly revealed Nussmeier was dealing with a torso injury suffered in training camp, which could help to explain some of Nussmeier’s struggles. Kelly said Nussmeier is trending in the right direction.

There’s a chance Nussmeier gets healthy and starts lighting it up again, but the issues are probably a bit deeper than that. LSU needs the run game to get going before space opens up down the field. If LSU can’t run the ball vs. five and six-man boxes, defenses will keep two safeties back and take away the deep ball.

LSU’s offense lacks an identity right now. Until that gets figured out, LSU won’t hit the explosive plays its looking for.

  • Real Madrid ready to seal the deal for teenage prodigy amid growing Chelsea interest

According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid are moving quickly to secure the signing of Kees Smit, aiming to close the deal as soon as possible to prevent him joining another European giant.

Smit, 19, has been on the radars of Los Blancos for a few months now, with the club even exploring the idea of signing him in the summer from AZ Alkmaar.

But, with that move, Real Madrid now face the risk of losing the youngster if other clubs step up their interest.

Chelsea, in particular, have already made moves and are keen on finalising a pre-agreement with the young midfielder in the coming months for next season.

Juni Calafat, Real Madrid’s head scout, has been monitoring Smit closely and considers him a priority.

The Spanish capital giants do not want a repeat of the Enzo Fernandez situation: the Argentine midfielder was a target for the Merengues but slipped away, eventually flourishing at Chelsea.

Although Real Madrid cannot sign every talented prospect they track, they believe Smit has special potential and fits perfectly into their long-term project. As such, they intend to seal the deal for the 19-year-old as soon as possible.

Smit is a U-19 UEFA European Championships winner with the Netherlands while he has also previously won the UEFA Youth League with AZ, where he has a contract until 2028.

The teenage midfielder has made ten appearances in all competitions this season, registering three assists.

The next few months are expected to see an intense battle between Real Madrid and Chelsea to secure his signature.

  • Paul Rowley: Salford coach praises staff ahead of final game

Paul Rowley: Salford coach praises staff ahead of final game

Outgoing Salford Red Devils coach Paul Rowley has labelled his staff as “unparalleled” ahead of his final match in charge of the club against Wakefield on Friday.

Rowley, 50, is stepping down as coach of Super League’s bottom side at the end of the season with the club facing an uncertain future following a campaign of unprecedented turmoil.

The club was taken over in February by a consortium fronted by Swiss businessman Dario Berta, who assured supporters he would “deliver additional significant investment for the future growth of the club.”

Despite this, there have been numerous high-profile departures, several late payments to staff and a winding-up petition ordered against the club.

“I’m relieved if I’m being honest and I’m pretty proud that I managed to get the team to the finish line,” Rowley told BBC Radio Manchester as he reflected on the 2025 season.

“That’s a bit sad really because you should never want the finish line to come in rugby league where the last game is the most important.

“Everybody at the club, certainly the staff, have been immense. I’m surrounded by good people. My staff have become my best friends and I think the moral compass of the staff at this club is unparalleled.

“We’ll bounce in to Friday and then we’ll probably just collapse in a heap after that and enjoy a bit of quality time – have a little bit of a reminisce and a cry, maybe.”

“There was more drugs, there was pills, alcohol, to escape myself from reality.

“I didn’t have to think about it. Of course it’s not good, it destroys you as a person.”

Borg was taken to hospital after an overdose, external in Milan in 1989 – an incident which made him reassess retirement.

    Analysis: Liverpool 3-2 Atletico Madrid

Alexander Isak got a taste of the attacking riches he will be surrounded by at Anfield, as Liverpool were 2-0 ahead before he even got his first touch in the famous red shirt.

Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah put Liverpool in control before a typically resilient Atletico, albeit not the Champions League force they once were, clung on by their fingertips to move within sight of an unlikely point with two goals from Spain midfielder Marco Llorente.

Liverpool were stunned, but they have form for many things this season, spurning two-goal leads against Bournemouth at Anfield and away at Newcastle United before grabbing victory late on.

Isak showed some neat touches and exciting link play before running out of steam, so he was watching from the bench as Liverpool added another chapter to the nights of Champions League drama at Anfield.

As in their four Premier League wins, Liverpool went right to the wire before winning. This time it was captain Van Dijk who was the hero with a towering header in front of The Kop deep into stoppage time.

It was the cue for more wild celebrations.

Slot will have his concerns that Liverpool struggle to hold on to an advantage, but their sheer force of will made this another late, late show at Anfield.

Connor Shaw updates: Latest news on former South Carolina, Browns QB after reportedly collapsing while coaching son’s football team

Former South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw collapsed Wednesday night while he was coaching his son’s football team, according to The State’s Jackson Castellano.

Shaw was reportedly hospitalized and taken to the emergency room at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital, with his condition unknown as of Wednesday.

A quarterback at South Carolina from 2010-13, Shaw later spent time in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears.

Here’s the latest on Shaw following Wednesday’s report of his collapse while coaching his son’s football game.

    Connor Shaw updates

On Wednesday night, The State reported that Shaw had been hospitalized after reportedly “collapsing at his son’s football game.” It is known that he was taken to the emergency room at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, but his condition was unknown.

According to The State, Shaw’s son is nine years old, and a few social media accounts began reporting that Shaw had “fell or passed out during his son’s game and was taken from the field by ambulance.”

Shaw played for the Gamecocks as a quarterback from 2010-13. In 2021, he was inducted into the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, as he still holds the program record for most wins by a quarterback. Shaw finished his Gamecocks career with 6,074 passing yards and 56 touchdowns.

In 2014, Shaw was signed by the Browns out of college. He started in one NFL game, Cleveland’s 2014 season finale against the Ravens, throwing for 177 yards. Shaw also spent time with the Bears in his NFL stint.

In 2020, Shaw returned to South Carolina initially as the quarterbacks coach, then as the director of player development. He also served as the program’s director of football relations in 2021.

According to The State, Shaw and his wife, Molly, lived in Lexington for a few years before moving to upstate South Carolina.

    This story will be updated.
