James Cook’s 2-yard run gives Bills the lead back

The Bills outplayed the Dolphins in the first half but went into the locker room tied 14-14.

They opened the second half with an eight-play, 61-yard touchdown drive. James Cook’s 2-yard run has the Bills back on top, 21-14, only 4:37 into the second half.

Cook has 10 carries for 76 yards with two receptions for 7 yards.

Josh Allen is 15-of-17 for 147 yards and two touchdowns, throwing four passes to tight end Dalton Kincaid for 60 yards and a touchdown.

The Bills now have 249 yards.

Buffalo Bills live updates: Highlights from Dolphins game in Week 3

Another week, another AFC East clash for the Buffalo Bills. While the Bills are coming into this game 2-0, confident and cohesive, the Miami Dolphins are feeling a lot like squished fish. Starting the season with an 0-2 record, not much has seemed to go right for them, including the clubbing they took in Week 1 by the Indianapolis Colts.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa played well enough last week to put his team in position to win. Nonetheless, the QB crumbled in the 4th quarter against the New England Patriots and the rest, they say, is history. While the Bills are heavy favorites, being given the largest margin of victory in Week 3 by 11.5 points, they have to stay focused and not let this become a trap game. Winning all of their AFC East…and all of their AFC games in general…will go a long way in getting the prized No. 1 seed come playoff time.

If you aren’t able to attend tonight’s game or have to miss it on television for any reason, don’t worry. We have you covered as we will be posting all of tonight’s biggest highlights right here, in one space, live as they happen.

  • Brock Purdy calls toe injury ‘a day-to-day thing this week,’ 49ers QB would love to play against Cardinals

Brock Purdy calls toe injury ‘a day-to-day thing this week,’ 49ers QB would love to play against Cardinals

In Week 2, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was “a long shot” to play against the New Orleans Saints after suffering toe and left shoulder injuries in a season-opening win over the Seattle Seahawks.

In Week 3, Purdy has now practiced back-to-back days. He followed backup quarterback Mac Jones at the podium Thursday and told reporters that his toe injury has “been a day-to-day thing this week.”

His status for Sunday’s game against the 2-0 Arizona Cardinals is still up in the air, although Purdy appears to be ahead of schedule in his recovery from a turf toe variant that was originally reported as a potential 2-5 week setback.

“Definitely just got to see come game time how I feel,” Purdy said. “Obviously I want to play every game. I want to be out there. We only get 17 regular-season games, and every game matters, especially a divisional [game], going against the Cardinals.

“So if you asked me, I’d love to [play], but I mean, I’m trying to be smart with my body here, but you never know. We’ll see when the game comes.”

Purdy said his left shoulder is “good,” when he was asked Thursday if it’s still an issue as well. The toe injury was the more serious of the two he sustained in Seattle.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week that Purdy’s toe injury occurred in the second quarter of the Week 1 matchup, when the fourth-year quarterback scrambled and was tackled by Seahawks safety Julian Love near the sideline.

But when asked about that play Thursday, Purdy didn’t confirm that it was the site of his injury.

“I think it was just an accumulation of certain plays and different moments in the game and stuff,” he said of his toe issue. “So I think I finished the game, and it was more so the adrenaline cooled down, and I was like, ‘Alright, something’s wrong with my toe here.’

“And obviously you go in, you get an MRI and you get a diagnosis and all that. So I didn’t really know until after, but obviously you go throughout a game and you get hit and go through certain things, but my mindset’s always been like, I can play, and you got to really take me off the field for something serious, but if I can walk and jog and throw a football, then I’m good to go.”

Purdy clarified that he let his team know something was up when his toe began to bother him during the game, but the worst of the pain didn’t set in until postgame, after he bounced back from a pair of interceptions and delivered a game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Jake Tonges with about 90 seconds left for a pivotal divisional win.

It was a resilient statement from the 2022 NFL Draft’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” who led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2023 season and signed a five-year, $265 million extension in May after San Francisco’s injury-riddled 6-11 finish last season.

This is the first time in Purdy’s career that he’s dealt with a toe injury. He said he’s gained a new appreciation for how healthy toes factor into quarterback play.

“I went back and watched film and just saw how explosive you really need to be at quarterback,” Purdy explained. “You don’t really think about it, but getting back from the line of scrimmage in your drop, your handoffs, carrying out a fake, bootlegs and scrambling, obviously you need your toes to be able to go in and out of those cuts, and it’s something that you can’t really mask.

“You got to be all in and healthy to be able to play the position of quarterback.”

Jones, whom the 49ers signed to a two-year deal this past offseason, filled in for Purdy last week, and the one-time Pro Bowler turned in an inspired performance, tossing three touchdowns in a 26-21 win over the Saints.

Jones’ time in the spotlight could be short-lived if Purdy keeps progressing at this rate.

  • No timetable for USC star to return

No timetable for USC star to return

    play

LOS ANGELES — There is no timetable for when Southern California women’s basketball star JuJu Watkins could return after suffering a season-ending injury in March.

Coach Lindsay Gottlieb gave an update on her guard’s status with reporters on Thursday, Sept. 18. She said Watkins has been “doing great” during her recovery and has been with the team during the summer. Gottlieb added, “JuJu is going to be back at some point,” but there is no answer if it will be this upcoming season.

“She’s doing well, I don’t have too much more to elaborate on that,” Gottlieb said. It’s a long process, and I’m just trying to be here for her to make sure this time when she’s not able to play the game that I’m still what she needs me to be.

“I have no other update in terms of timetable, so just to preemptively say I don’t know anything else other than that, other than she’s attacking her rehab and in a really good, good place with that,” she added.

    What happened to JuJu Watkins?

Watkins suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the second round of the women’s NCAA Tournament against Mississippi State. The injury happened early in the first quarter as Watkins suddenly went down without any noticeable contact. She immediately grabbed her right knee and was in visible pain before she was taken off the court.

The injury sidelined Watkins for the remainder of the tournament. It was a devastating blow for a Trojans team that had national championship aspirations after a 28-3 regular season in which it won the Big Ten regular season title and was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans advanced to the Elite Eight, where they were eliminated by eventual national champion Connecticut to deny USC its first Final Four appearance since 1986.

The hometown kid, Watkins continued to build off her dazzling freshman season with a sophomore year that solidified her as one of the faces of the sport. She averaged 23.9 points per game − sixth most in Division I − with 3.4 assists and 6.8 rebounds per game. Watkins scored in double figures in 32 of the 33 games she played. She was named Big Ten Player of the Year, was a unanimous first-team All-American selection and named the women’s 2025 Naismith National Player of the Year.

    When could JuJu Watkins return?

While there is no definitive timeline for when Watkins could return, there is a chance she could play in the 2025-26 season.

ACL tears typically require 8-12 months of recovery, and since Watkins suffered her injury in March, there is a chance she could return as early December before conference play begins.

However, it’s unlikely Watkins returns that soon and she could end up not returning until March around the 2026 NCAA Tournament. She could also sit out the upcoming season and return for 2026-27 campaign.

    USC women’s basketball 2025-26 outlook

With Watkins still recovering from injury, USC will be without its star in some of the most notable matchups of the 2025-26 season. The Trojans play North Carolina State on Nov. 9 and South Carolina on Nov. 15, as well as a road trip to Notre Dame on Nov. 21 and a home game against Connecticut on Dec. 13.

Despite missing Watkins, USC still remains a loaded team that will contend in the Big Ten and for a spot in the Final Four. Breakout guard Kennedy Smith is back and it has added consensus five-star recruit Jazzy Davidson and UCLA-transfer Londynn Jones.

  • Vítor Pereira signs new Wolves contract

Wolverhampton have officially extended Vítor Pereira’s contract for another three seasons, the club confirmed on Thursday.

The Portuguese coach, who took charge midway through last season, will now remain at Molineux until 2028.

Nevertheless, the club has praised Pereira’s work since his arrival, pointing to the turnaround that secured the team’s survival last term and the historic run of six consecutive wins during the 2024/25 campaign.

  • Tarik Skubal returns from injury scare for Tigers, giving up 1 run in 6 innings against Guardians

Tarik Skubal returns from injury scare for Tigers, giving up 1 run in 6 innings against Guardians

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal returned from an injury scare and gave up one run over six innings against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday.

Skubal, who had tightness on his left side during his previous start, allowed seven hits, struck out nine and walked two in a 102-pitch outing.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award and pitching Triple Crown winner was replaced by right-hander Troy Melton in the seventh in a 1-all game. Nine pitches later, Jose Ramirez hit a go-ahead, two-run homer to give the Guardians a 3-1 lead.

The AL Central-leading Tigers were desperately hoping to win the series finale against the second-place Guardians, whose recent rally coupled with Detroit’s slump has made the division race competitive with a little more than a week left in the regular season.

Cleveland made the most of Skubal’s mistake in the fourth, taking advantage of an 0-2 changeup he threw over the plate with Jhonkensy Noel’s game-tying solo homer. In the same inning, the 28-year-old Skubal struck out Brayan Rocchio to set a single-season career high with 229 strikeouts.

The hard-throwing lefty was more effective later in the game, striking out David Fry with a 101.5-mph pitch to end the top of the fifth inning.

He started the sixth inning with 82 pitches and struck out Gabriel Arias on four pitches and Noel on four more pitches. With a chance to get out of the sixth, Rocchio hit a triple that right fielder Wenceel Pérez had a chance to catch but could not snag.

The Guardians extended the inning with Austin Hedges’ walk on a pitch Skubal thought was a strike as he squatted in disbelief that he threw a ball.

Skubal responded by striking out Nolan Jones with a 99.5-mph pitch to end the sixth in his start that showed he’s healthy. He threw 100 pitches for the third time, two shy of a season-high 105 in July against Texas.

This season marks the 71st edition of Europe’s most prestigious club competition, and the 34th under the name UEFA Champions League. The tournament began on July 8, 2025, and will conclude with the grand final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest on May 30, 2026.

The competition unfolds according to a precise draw calendar—highly anticipated moments for both fans and clubs—which shapes the matchups and the entire structure of the tournament.

The draw for the knockout play-off round is scheduled for January 30, 2026. As for the draws for the round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals, these will take place on February 27, 2026.

  • Liverpool vs Everton: Preview, Predicted Lineups and Where to Watch Merseyside Derby

The first Merseyside derby of the season is right upon us as Everton make their annual pilgrimage to Anfield on the back of a three-game unbeaten run.

Four games into the season and Everton are sixth in the league after picking up seven points from a possible 12. Following a rather dismal no-show against newly-promoted Leeds United at Elland Road, David Moyes’s side managed to turn things around with back-to-back wins over Brighton and Wolves.

While the Blues kept up the quality of performance against Aston Villa, they were left frustrated and had to settle for just one point at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Despite managing 20 attempts throughout the game, they failed to rattle Emiliano Martinez’s net over the course of 90 minutes.

The need for efficiency in the final third is expected to be central to the team’s pre-match discussions. Everton’s ability to fashion out chances, helped by the arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish to add to the mercurial talent of Iliman Ndiaye, has been the biggest positive takeaway of the nascent stages of the season so far.

They’ve also been largely solid at the back despite missing star centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. James Garner has been instrumental, filling in at left-back for the injured Vitalii Mykolenko seamlessly.

Going into the game, the biggest question for Evertonians surrounds the striker and who should start at Anfield. Beto forgot his scoring shoes against Aston Villa and missed a series of good chances. When Beto’s not scoring, he can often be underwhelming.

Meanwhile, Thierno Barry, signed from Villarreal for £27m this summer, has only looked good in bits, but his overall game is far from the demands of a lethal Premier League number 9.

Given the team’s positive start to the season, the form of Grealish and Ndiaye, as well as depth on the bench, Everton should undoubtedly take the game to the opposition as they search for their first win at Anfield since 2021.

Liverpool vs Everton: Team News and Predicted XI

Everton will be without Branthwaite for this game and are expected to miss Vitalii Mykolenko once again. Nathan Patterson and Adam Aznou weren’t “100% match ready” according to Moyes for the last game against Aston Villa and it remains to be seen whether they make it to the squad here.

Iliman Ndiaye was also in doubt for the clash against Unai Emery’s side after Moyes mentioned that the Senegalese had picked up a knock on international duty. However, Ndiaye started and finished the game without any concern.

If Mykolenko is ruled out of this clash, Garner is expected to be deployed at left-back again. However, Merlin Rohl, fresh off a wonderful cameo on his Everton debut, could be a surprise addition in the middle of the park, replacing Tim Iroegbunam as Idrissa Gueye’s partner in the engine room.

Ndiaye, Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall are all expected to start while Beto could receive the nod ahead of Thierno Barry for this clash.

Everton predicted starting XI: Jordan Pickford, Jake O’Brien, James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, James Garner, Merlin Rohl, Idrissa Gueye, Iliman Ndiaye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jack Grealish, Beto

Liverpool vs Everton: Head-to-Head and Form Guide

In 246 matches of the longest-running top-flight derby in English football, Everton have won on 68 occasions while Liverpool have 100 victories. 78 matches between the two sides have ended in draws.

The Blues’ last victory against their city rivals was in April last year, when goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed a sweet 2-0 success at home.

They held the opposition to a 2-2 draw in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park last season, memorable for James Tarkowski’s famous last-gasp equaliser, before suffering a 1-0 defeat in the return fixture.

    Form Guide:

When is the match between Liverpool and Everton?

Everton will face Liverpool in the first Merseyside derby of the season on Saturday, September 20. Kickoff at Anfield is scheduled at 12:30pm.

Where to watch Liverpool vs Everton?

The Premier League clash between Liverpool and Everton will be available to watch on TNT Sports 1 and TNT Sports Ultimate, as is the case with every 12.30pm Premier League kickoff. TNT Sports 1 can be found on Channel 410 for Sky customers, Channel 430 for BT and EE customers and 521 for Virgin Media subscribers.

Those in the UK can also stream the match live on the Discovery+ platform.

  • Wideman hints that the Mystics will not prioritize free agency in 2026

Wideman hints that the Mystics will not prioritize free agency in 2026

The Washington Mystics finished the 2025 WNBA season 10th in the standings, missing the playoffs, but also finishing better than what some analysts predicted before the season began.

With Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen as the team’s foundational duo, this could be a selling point to unrestricted free agents in 2026 when the WNBA’s salary cap will likely expand by a lot when a new Collective Bargaining Agreement kicks in. However, don’t expect the Mystics to prioritize bringing in new star talent that way.

According to Jenn Hatfield of The Next, Mystics General Manager Jamila Wideman said in an exit interview that next season would likely be “more of the same.” She wouldn’t say that the postseason would be a goal in 2026, but wouldn’t say that the playoffs are not a goal either. Here is a quote from Hatfield’s piece.

“Whether [next season] includes the playoffs or not, I think the important thing for us is to remember that we are building for something even bigger than that,” she said. “I think we are building with an aspiration to create a culture of competitiveness that lets us have the playoffs in our sight year in and year out. And so I think we’re one year into building that foundation, and we look forward to continuing to build next year.”

“Whether [next season] includes the playoffs or not, I think the important thing for us is to remember that we are building for something even bigger than that. I think we are building with an aspiration to create a culture of competitiveness that lets us have the playoffs in our sight year in and year out. And so I think we’re one year into building that foundation, and we look forward to continuing to build next year.”

I would agree with Wideman that developing Citron and Iriafen need to be the top priority. They have three first round draft picks for 2026. It mirrors Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger’s vision on how professional teams should be built. After all, look at how the Wizards are going nearly scorched earth on finding as many first round draft picks as possible over the last three years.

Here is where things could get interesting, though. The Mystics, unlike the Wizards, had two rookies who made the All-Star team in Wideman’s first year as GM and Winger’s first year having hands on control over the Mystics. If I were a betting man, the Mystics have a better chance of making the playoffs and being a contender than the Wizards because of that head start with Citron and Iriafen outperforming expectations.

But the Mystics also can’t just sit back and hope every draft pick outperforms expectations. Some will underperform. Also, Citron and Iriafen need to remain happy in a quickly changing WNBA. The Mystics weren’t bottom feeders in 2025 like many predicted. But after Brittney Sykes was traded to the Seattle Storm, it was clear that Winger and Wideman wanted to move full steam ahead with the Wizards plan which is still very much in its early stages.

But if the Mystics do not try to add some veteran star along with Citron and Iriafen sooner rather than later, Washington can risk making them unhappy. This offseason is supposed to be the reset that can help the Mystics accelerate AND maintain long-term success. Hopefully, that happens.
