Roger Goodell questions existence of Tom Brady conflict, despite existence of rules to address it

The vast majority of the NFL ecosystem now recognizes that Tom Brady’s dual roles as Fox broadcaster and Raiders minority owner create a conflict of interest. The small minority of those who believe otherwise include Brady himself — and the man who once suspended Brady for four games due to alleged cheating.

MDS covered Commissioner Roger Goodell’s comments about the Brady brouhaha earlier today. Once I saw what Goodell said, I had to chime in, too.

Per Alex Sherman of CNBC.com, Goodell was “animated” in his effort to argue that no Brady conflict of interest exists.

“Where’s the conflict?” Goodell told Sherman. “He’s not hanging around in the facilities. We don’t allow that.”

They don’t let him “hang around” in the facilities because of the conflict. The steps taken to minimize the impact of a conflict of interest does not erase the conflict.

There’s only one way to remove the conflict: Remove the conflict.

For his part, Brady stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the conflict. He attributes criticism of the situation to “paranoia and distrust,” and he seems to believe that those who make a habit of spotting the various things that can undermine the integrity of the sport are sensitive to such matters because their own integrity is suspect.

Goodell has taken a more simple approach. But his argument is logically flawed.

There was a conflict. The NFL implemented rules to address the conflict. There is no conflict. We have always been at war with Eastasia.

There conflict still exists. But the league won’t do anything about it, in part because the league doesn’t want to admit that it created this mess by approving Brady’s partial purchase of the Raiders last October.

And if, as Goodell now says, teams don’t have to talk to Brady, we suggest that all teams take a page from the Marshawn Lynch playbook and offer one answer when asked questions during a Brady production meeting: “I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”

The debate continues to overlook the incredible value of being on the field before games. Players and assistant coaches won’t shun Brady; beyond the fact that he’s Tom Freakin’ Brady, he’s in a position to potentially give them future employment. They’ll talk to him, he’ll listen, and he’ll gather information that can be used (as Brady himself says) to return the Raiders “to the glory of those amazing years under Al Davis and John Madden.”

If that happens, that’s when the other owners will wake up. That’s when a critical mass of those who rubber stamped his sweetheart deal with Mark Davis will propose a rule that prevents Brady from participating in production meetings, talking by phone to players and coaches from other teams, and standing on the field during pregame warmups and taking mental notes.

Or maybe they’ll do what they should have done last year — tell him to pick a lane.

  • Paula Creamer on Charley Hull asking her for an autograph at Solheim

Paula Creamer on Charley Hull asking her for an autograph at Solheim

Not long before the Ryder Cup kicked off this week in New York, the Solheim Cup captains and their assistants gathered in the Netherlands to preview the 2026 venue in a year-to-go event.

Paula Creamer, a U.S. Women’s Open champion whose career has been defined by the red, white and blue, is once again an assistant captain, this time to Angela Stanford. The 39-year-old ranks second on the all-time U.S. points list behind Cristie Kerr and boasts a tremendous highlight reel across her seven appearances.

But one of the most talked about moments of her Solheim career came after a loss to a 17-year-old rookie named Charley Hull.

While a teenage Creamer became the youngest American Solheim Cup player in 2005 at age 19, Hull was even younger when she debuted for Europe in 2013.

The pair squared off against each other in singles at Colorado Golf Club, and Hull, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, put up the first point for Europe with a 5-and-4 drumming of Creamer.

As if that weren’t shocking enough, the English player then immediately asked Creamer for an autograph.

“I’m like, looking around,” recalled Creamer. “I’m like, she’s talking to me? Like, what, on my golf ball?”

The autograph was for Creamer’s good friend James, who was a “big fan.”

Just how fresh-faced was young Hull that week?

When Suzann Pettersen told her Sunday morning that she was playing against Lizette Salas (in singles), Hull asked, “Who is Salas?”

Creamer, of course, knows what it’s like to take down a Solheim giant as a rookie. In 2005, she famously trounced Dame Laura Davies, 7 and 5, in singles.

“I wish I could have finished 18 holes,” said Creamer. “I think I could have shot like 58 that day, you know? I mean, it was like, unstoppable.”

  • Transgender track star from N.J. takes legal action over alleged ban

Transgender track star from N.J. takes legal action over alleged ban

A transgender sprinter from New Jersey is suing SUNY Geneseo and the NCAA, claiming she was wrongly barred from women’s races at a March track meet.

The runner, Sadie Schreiner of Hillsborough, says she qualified for the 200- and 400-meter events at the Geneseo Early Invitational but was barred from competing even though she met the entry standards, according to a lawsuit obtained by The Athletic. Schreiner, who is on the 2024-25 roster at Division III Rochester Institute of Technology, argues her exclusion reflects broader discrimination against transgender athletes in collegiate sports.

“SUNY Geneseo is a member institution of the NCAA, and we adhere to the NCAA’s policy,” a SUNY Geneseo spokesperson said, via The Athletic. “We will not comment further due to pending litigation.”

The lawsuit comes more than five months after the NCAA changed its participation policy for transgender athletes to limit competition in women’s sports to athletes assigned female at birth. That change came a day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order intended to ban transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports.

Previously, Schreiner had sued Princeton University, claiming she was illegally removed shortly before her race in a school-hosted track meet in May due to her gender identity.

“Princeton follows NCAA rules and policies for determining who is eligible for varsity athletic events, which is what we did in this case,” a Princeton University spokesperson said, via The Athletic.

Schreiner is a two-time All-American in 2023–24. She finished third in the 200 meters and eighth in the 400 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships and holds multiple school records in the 200, 300 and 400 meters. Schreiner has also become a notable voice in the debate over transgender women’s participation in women’s sports.

  • Rams got ‘big win’ in Jalen Ramsey-Dolphins trade, says ESPN analyst

Rams got ‘big win’ in Jalen Ramsey-Dolphins trade, says ESPN analyst

Fans hated the deal at the time, but how does it look 2 years later?

The Los Angeles Rams hit the reset button in 2023, moving on from several key players just one year after winning the Super Bowl. Among the players they jettisoned was Jalen Ramsey.

They controversially traded him to the Miami Dolphins that March, moving on from their top cornerbacks and one of the best defensive backs in the league. Even worse, they traded him for a third-round pick and backup tight end Hunter Long.

At the time, the return for the Rams seemed minimal. How did a top-tier cornerback only net Los Angeles a mid-round pick and a tight end with one career catch? Ramsey’s contract had a lot to do with it, as did the Rams essentially letting him pick his landing spot in a trade.

Even as bad as the trade looked initially, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell sees it as a “big win for the Rams.” He reevaluated several big trades from 2022 and 2023 this week and graded the Ramsey swap as a major win for Los Angeles. Why? Mostly because Byron Young has turned into a valuable playmaker for the Rams.

The Rams weren’t out of contention for long, as they made a trip back to the playoffs in 2023. Long didn’t do much, but the third-round pick became Young, who had 15.5 sacks in his first two seasons and has been playing at a Pro Bowl level so far in 2025. On a four-year, $5.5 million deal, Young has been a huge bargain for the Rams’ defense. Cornerback, meanwhile, has been a weak spot for Los Angeles, but the Rams landed a player at a more valuable position at a fraction of Ramsey’s cost.

Ramsey was on the trade block again this offseason after a falling-out with the Dolphins and the Rams were reportedly interested in potentially acquiring him. The Steelers wound up making a move for Ramsey and Jonnu Smith, sending the Dolphins a fifth-rounder and Minkah Fitzpatrick in exchange for those two players and a seventh-rounder.

Ramsey is a difference-maker when healthy but the Rams didn’t feel he was worth the high cost when they began their rebuild in 2022. Even though moving on from him was tough, the defense has been one of the best in the NFL recently despite being without a premier corner like Ramsey.

  • 5 takeaways from Cleveland’s Week 3 victory

    5 takeaways from Cleveland’s Week 3 victory

The Cleveland Browns13-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Week 3 was not a masterpiece. It was, however, a defining moment for a team that had been searching for its identity. In a game where the offense sputtered and hope seemed lost, the Browns found a way to win. This was more than just a win; it was a revelation.

Here are five key takeaways from the Browns’ perspective.

    1. Quinshon Judkins is a dude.

Rookie running back Quinshon Judkins announced his arrival in the NFL with an electrifying performance against a formidable Packers defense. While the offense as a whole struggled to find its rhythm, Judkins was a consistent bright spot. He finished the game with 94 rushing yards on 18 carries, including a career-long 38-yard burst that jump-started a crucial scoring drive.

He capped off his day with his first career touchdown, a game-tying score that demonstrated his power and determination. Judkins has already proven he can handle a heavy workload and get better as the game goes on, and he’s clearly the Browns’ lead back moving forward.

    2. This defense has the potential to be one of the greats

The Browns’ defense has been excellent through the first three weeks of the season, and their performance against the Packers was nothing short of legendary. They held Green Bay to just 10 points and 204 total yards, harassing quarterback Jordan Love all afternoon with five sacks.

They were opportunistic, too, with Grant Delpit securing the team’s first takeaway of the season on a game-changing interception late in the fourth quarter.

This defense is fast, physical, and disciplined. Led by a dominant front and an athletic secondary, this unit has all the makings of a truly special group that could be mentioned in the same breath as the most dominant defenses in modern NFL history.

    3. The team has each other’s backs.

In a game where the offense was struggling, the defense and special teams stepped up and carried the load. This was a true team victory. After Delpit’s interception gave the offense a short field, Judkins punched in the game-tying touchdown. Then, after the Packers got into position for a potential game-winning field goal, the Browns’ special teams unit came up with a huge blocked kick by Shelby Harris.

The offense, which had done little all game, then managed to move the ball just enough to set up kicker Andre Szmyt for the game-winning 55-yard field goal. This was a team that trusted one another and was willing to do whatever it took to win, regardless of which side of the ball was making the plays.

    4. The Offense Needs to Find Its Rhythm

While the defense and special teams were magnificent, the offense still has work to do. Quarterback Joe Flacco struggled for much of the game, and the unit was unable to sustain drives. The running game showed promise with Judkins, but the passing game needs to be more consistent.

With a defense this dominant, the offense doesn’t have to be spectacular, but it does need to be able to put together more scoring drives. This win, however, could be the spark they need. A victory like this, built on resilience and teamwork, can ignite a team and lead to a more confident and effective offensive unit moving forward.

    5. Redemption is sweet.

Andre Szmyt’s game-winning kick was a moment of redemption for a player who had been under intense scrutiny after a rocky start to the season.

The first-year kicker had missed some crucial kicks in previous games, and many were questioning his place on the roster. But in the biggest moment of his young career, Szmyt delivered. The kick was a perfect 55-yarder, a sign that he has the mental fortitude to handle the pressure.

His teammates swarmed him after the kick, a clear indication of their faith in him. This moment of redemption was symbolic of the entire game a team that had been down and out found a way to rally and come out on top.

  • Jaguars’ pass-Rush: Where creativity meets talent

Jaguars’ pass-Rush: Where creativity meets talent

One of the biggest critiques of the 2024 Jaguars’ defense was its lack of a pass-rush, despite having one of the league’s best tandems in Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker. The unit finished 30th in pressure rate and were dead last in blitz percentage.

Other than Arik Armstead’s return to his natural position at defensive tackle, not much has changed along the defensive front. Hines-Allen and Walker are very much still doing their thing as well. Walker’s taken yet another step forward it seems.

Among edge duos, Hines-Allen and Walker rank second (Tied w/ Houston) with 31 pressures as a couple. They are the only pair to account for over 50% of their team’s pressures. At defensive tackle, not much has changed in terms of production. The Jaguars are tied for 29th in pressures (12) from their defensive interior.

    >>> STREAM ACTION SPORTS JAX 24/7 LIVE <<<

What has changed is the mentality and philosophy of the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator. Last season, Ryan Nielsen ran a very man-heavy defense that featured a very low blitz rate. In some ways, it made it easy for opposing offenses to know what to expect.

That certainly has not been the case for this year’s defense, led by Anthony Campanile. Campanile has been creative and diverse, sending unique blitz packages at opposing quarterbacks to decipher and deal with.

According to FTN Fantasy, the Jaguars are seventh in heavy-blitz (6+) rate and ninth in stunt rate. It’s working too. The Jaguars rank second with 18 pressures from non-DL players. He’s being further creative with his blitz packages by dropping his DL into coverage more than any

other team, instead opting to send LBs and DBs in their place to confuse opposing QBs.

Hines-Allen, Walker, and Armstead are still no doubt getting their looks, but Campanile is keeping opponents guessing as to who is coming, how many, and where from. The Jags have had a lot of success on stunts. Walker’s sack against the Texans was a mini stunt, running around teammate Devin Lloyd.

Added pressure, unique blitz packages, and heavy use of dime packages are all part of Campanile’s M.O. and what’s led to the immediate success of this defense. Last season, the defense forced just eight takeaways. This season, it’s at nine and counting after just week three. Creativity has met talent.
