Sixers’ Joel Embiid discusses mental health, changing play style

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers will go as far as Joel Embiid takes them in the 2025-26 season. They know it. He knows it. He doesn’t run from it. He knows the challenge right in front of him and it’s all about preparing for what lies ahead.

Embiid has never shied away from talking about his mental health. He has taken a lot of criticism in the past due to his injury issues and he has had to overcome a lot in terms of the injuries. The injuries plus the outside noise can be a lot to handle for anybody and the big fella has had to battle through all of the adversity.

As he heads into camp after a season in which he played only 19 games, he is in a much better place in terms of his mental.

“Obviously, this time last year, I think going into training camp, I didn’t really know what was possible and what I was going to be able to do which I didn’t end up doing much,” Embiid said. “This time was a different story. Mentally, I feel better. I got great people around me. That’s all that matters. They keep me up. Keep staying positive and, obviously, it helps that we’re in a different situation than a year ago this time right before training camp. So, it’s a good start and, yeah. Just gotta keep going.”

While his mental health has improved, one does have to wonder about his physical health. Embiid plays so hard on both ends of the floor on a nightly basis and one bad fall could absolutely aggravate that left knee. One has to wonder if a change in his style of play could prolong his career and keep him on the floor for the Sixers.

“That’s tough,” Embiid pondered. “I mean, I think about it, but then again, you can’t get out of all I know is—ever since I started—was to play hard. Play both ends. There’s a lot of people in the league that play one side. Whether it’s offense or defense and a lot of times, for me, my mentality is do whatever it takes to win. For all of my career, it’s been having to do both.”

Embiid has always made sure he’s in a position to make sure the Sixers can win. He deserves so much credit for continuing to battle through all of the injuries his body has dealt with in his career, but still gets up to lead the Sixers. A change in his style would probably help, but he doesn’t want to take anything away from what he brings to the floor either.

“There’s some guys that are asked to do a lot offensively and take plays off defensively, and there’s guys that are asked to be the best defenders, and kind of, like, chill in the corner,” Embiid finished. “I don’t blame them. I’ve gotten to this point because of how good I am on both ends of the floor so if you’re asking me to change the way I play. The only guess that I have is either play offense fully and take plays off defensively, which doesn’t suit me. I don’t think I would ever be OK with that so I don’t know. I think we’ll just wait and see, but if it’s gotta be that way, it’s definitely gonna be an adjustment, but I don’t see that happening.”

The big fella will be looking to lead the Sixers back into championship contention in the upcoming season.

  • James Vowles cools hype after landmark Carlos Sainz podium: “Trust the process”

James Vowles cools hype after landmark Carlos Sainz podium: “Trust the process”

James Vowles believes Carlos Sainz’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix podium finish is an important sign that the team is progressing, but not proof that the Grove outfit can immediately contend at the front of the grid next season.

Speaking in the team’s post-race debrief, The Vowles Verdict, the Williams team principal urged for patience as he once again outlined the sheer scale of the task it is to push up the pack.

“I think what I’ve said all the way along is some positives and negatives for everyone to acknowledge,” he said. “I’m confident that we as Williams will step forward every year going forward from here onwards. That’s important to know.

“We’re on a good pathway. We’re investing in a good way. There’s a but… We still have a long way to go.

“This is one podium and the giants out there are able to get on the podium every week and win races and we have a long way to go before we’re able to achieve that. And in one year, we won’t fix everything that we need to fix.

“But my ask of you is stay with us. I hope what everyone can see is we’re on the right journey. Trust the process. And there’s a lot of good things to come. But be by Williams’s side when it happens.”

Sainz finished third on the Baku circuit, behind race winner Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell. The impressive result from the Spaniard delivered Williams’s first Formula 1 podium since the rain-shortened 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. At full race distance, it was Lance Stroll’s third place in Baku in 2017.

Starting on the front row, Sainz was able to execute a clean race as chaos erupted behind him. Managing to hold on to third place as Russell pushed his way forward, he scored 15 points while team-mate Alex Albon finished 13th after a challenging campaign.

“Honestly, I cannot describe how happy I am or how good this feels,” Sainz said following the race. “It tastes even better than the first-ever podium that I did.

“We’ve been fighting hard all year and, finally today, we just proved that when we have the speed. We’ve had it all year, and when everything comes together, we can do some amazing things together.

“We nailed the race – not one mistake, and we managed to beat a lot of cars that, yesterday, I wasn’t expecting to beat.”

2025 is a year of building for Williams, with Vowles often framing the season as a bridge to success come the change in regulations while he builds infrastructure, processes and investment. This podium, however, is the morale boost the outfit needs after a podium has eluded it for so long.

  • Liverpool want to finally end five YEAR chase with enormous transfer

Liverpool hope to finally wrap up a transfer they first looked at over five years ago. A long time coming, then.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a centre-back. Giovanni Leoni is now out for a long, long time – potentially a full year, leaving the Reds with just three senior options.

Anyone who remembers 2020/21 will tell you that’s a bad situation to be in.

    🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨

But the need actually goes deeper than that. Liverpool also need to think about replacing Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Joe Gomez, too, has been heavily linked with an exit. AC Milan tried to sign him right at the end of the summer window, only to lose out after Liverpool’s failure to sign Marc Guehi.

Then there’s the need for a long-term Virgil van Dijk successor. That was supposed to be Konate, of course, but he could now depart.

Liverpool, then, are looking at potential options and that’s reportedly turned their attention back onto a long-term target.

Bild claim that Liverpool are looking at Dayot Upamecano as a potential signing in 2026. The Frenchman is out of contract with Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

That would make him an ideal replacement for Konate, of course. What better way to replace someone leaving without a transfer fee than signing someone without a transfer fee?

Let alone someone who’s also a French international centre-back with top-level experience. Liverpool couldn’t really ask for more.

  • Chelsea fans’ preferred lineup against Brighton: Garnacho, Gittens don’t make the cut

Chelsea fans’ preferred lineup against Brighton: Garnacho, Gittens don’t make the cut

Chelsea are in the midst of an injury crisis, but a couple of our big-money summer signings have not yet convinced the WAGNH Community that this would be the ideal time for them to start and start making an impact. Neither Alejandro Garnacho (46%) nor Jamie Gittens (12%) make the cut for this weekend’s people’s choice lineup.

Instead, it’s Andrey Santos who jumps the queue by collecting more votes than Enzo Fernández, even. Either Santos or Enzo could play the most advanced of a midfield trio.

Meanwhile, in defense, we have a scrambled situation as both Tosin Adarabioyo (40%) and Wesley Fofana (36%) have been ruled out since most of the voting was conducted. Next man up would be Josh Acheampong (31%), and surely Enzo Maresca doesn’t have much other choice either.

    4-2-3-1 (77%)
    Sánchez (80%) | Cucurella (98%), Chalobah (87%), Acheampong (31%), James (91%) | Santos (69%), Caicedo (98%) | Estêvão (95%), Enzo (53%), Neto (90%) | João Pedro (97%)

Others on the subs bench include Tyrique George (19%), Malo Gusto (19%), and Jorrel Hato (10%).

Kiké Hernández hits 2-run HR, Dalton Rushing has 2 hits and a key RBI as Dodgers beat Mariners 3-2

SEATTLE (AP) — Kiké Hernández hit a two-run home run, Dalton Rushing had two hits and a key RBI, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Friday night.

Justin Wrobleski, the second of seven Dodgers pitchers in a bullpen game, got the win. Wrobleski (5-5) gave up three hits and struck out three in two innings. Tanner Scott got the last three outs, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam, for his 23rd save.

Los Angeles, which clinched its 12th NL West title in 13 years on Thursday, won its third straight.

The American League West champion Mariners had won seven straight overall and 17 of their last 18. Seattle also snapped an 11-game home winning streak.

Rushing singled to open the third inning and Hernández lined a 3-1 pitch off Mariners starter George Kirby over the left-field wall for his 10th homer to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.

Michael Conforto walked to start the sixth, and Teoscar Hernández singled. Two outs later, Rushing singled to center to drive in Conforto for a two-run lead.

Dominic Canzone’s RBI single in the eighth pulled the Mariners within one.

Emmet Sheehan started and gave up a run and a hit in the first inning, with the run scoring on a fielding error by Conforto. Sheehan was followed by Wrobleski, Will Klein, Anthony Banda, Roki Sasaki, Blake Treinen and Scott.

Kirby (10-8) gave up two runs and three hits in five innings, striking out 10.

The Mariners’ AL MVP contender Cal Raleigh went 2 for 5 with a single and double and three strikeouts while NL MVP favorite Shohei Ohtani was 0 for 3 with a walk for the Dodgers.

    Key moment

Scott gave up a two-out double to Raleigh in the bottom of the ninth, then intentionally walked Julio Rodríguez and hit Mitch Garver to load the bases, but he struck out Eugenio Suárez to end the game.

    Key stat

Josh Naylor’s steal of second in the third inning was his 30th stolen base of the year. He joined Jeff Bagwell (1997, ’99) and Paul Goldschmidt (2016) as the only first basemen with 20 homers and 30 steals in a season.

Virginia fans instantly storm field after upset victory over No. 8 Florida State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — When Tommy Casetellanos’s last-ditch heave into the corner of the end zone was intercepted, his intended receiver, Squirrel White, lay on the turf. Instantly, Virginia fans standing just off the field, at the base of Scott Stadium’s grass hill, rushed the field, swarming and trampling White and each other.

The play sealed Virginia’s 46-38 double-overtime victory over No. 8 Florida State on Friday night. Seminoles coach Mike Norvell said he believed all of his players were unharmed.

“I’m not sure of any issues,” Norvell said. “We got everybody in the locker room.”

Virginia coach Tony Elliott said he regretted being unable to speak to Norvell and Florida State players, including Little and fellow receiver Duce Robinson, after the game.

“I hope that nobody got injured,” Elliott said. “You don’t want to see that. I hate that I didn’t get a chance to go shake Coach Norvell’s hand, because I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for him and what he’s done with that program.”

While no players or coaches were apparently injured, witnesses saw at least one fan being taken off the field on a stretcher and at least a dozen others being tended to by stadium personnel.

Over the summer the ACC instituted a new policy that fines schools for field and basketball court stormings. The first occurrence results in a $50,000 fine, the second $100,000 and the third offense or more over a two-year rolling period will be a $200,000 fine. All fines will be put into the conference’s postgraduate scholarship account.

The first conference school to be hit with a fine? That was Florida State after it opened the season with an upset of Alabama.
