Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal: Why was Arsenal’s penalty overturned at Newcastle?

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville on Sky Sports: “Viktor Gyokeres kicks it against Nick Pope’s feet. Pope has still blocked Viktor Gyokeres.

“Gyokeres touches the ball and then there is a touch and then he takes him down after that.

“I’m definitely torn. Nick Pope does get a touch and that is usually the barometer for referees and goalkeepers and penalties.”

Former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin on BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is not how I saw it. I have to be honest, the VAR has looked at it and the referee has looked at it.

“Yes, he got a touch on it but he still took out the player. But I am looking at it from the forward’s perspective.”

Match of the Day pundit, former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart: “If Pope touches the ball, then it’s not a penalty – and he does touch it before he hits Gyokeres.

“If you break it down and see why it’s not been given, then you can’t argue with the decision.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp on Sky Sports: “He gets a touch but I’m not sure it’s enough to negate the foul. I’m amazed it got overturned.

“Even though he got a touch, he still fouls the player. Gyokores anticipates it, gets away from it and he clears him out. I can see both sides, but I’m surprised it got overturned.”

Former Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand on Sky Sports: “It’s a great touch. When I first saw it, I shouted, ‘I think Pope gets a touch’. He goes through, he does get a touch and as a centre-forward, I probably do want the penalty.

“Once the goalkeeper gets a touch and he deviates the ball, it’s not a penalty. I don’t know what Pope can do there.”

  • 😼‍💹 Emphatic 7-1 win as new Icon League team gets a footballing lesson

The first matchday of the Icon League kicked off with the game between Buzz Club and Find the Pro Icons. The latter were only officially introduced yesterday and thus had hardly any preparation time.

This quickly became apparent in the first match. They went into the break with a 0:2 deficit. In the 15th minute, there was a brief glimmer of hope when Cem Felek reduced the score to 1:2 with a powerful shot from a distance.

However, in the direct counterattack, Felek was injured so severely that he had to leave the field in tears. Particularly bitter: Exactly in this situation, Yilmaz scored to make it 1:3. After that, the Find the Pro Icons fell apart, and Buzz Club took advantage of their chances ruthlessly.

In the end, Buzz Club secured the first three points. However, the high victory should not be overestimated due to the overall situation.

  • England’s Women’s Rugby World Cup winners hope to inspire next generation

England’s Women’s Rugby World Cup winners hope to inspire next generation

It has been a standout summer for women’s sport.

England’s World Cup triumph – their third, following wins in 1994 and 2014 – came exactly two months after England’s footballers beat Spain on penalties to defend their title as champions of Europe.

For Aldcroft, the success of Chloe Kelly and company provided that extra injection of inspiration to put consecutive World Cup final defeats behind them and create a legacy of their own.

“It’s amazing. Earlier in the summer we saw the Lionesses and that gave us the inspiration to do our part and build that momentum,” Aldcroft said.

“We wanted to inspire that next generation, to see young girls in the stadium on shoulders but also inspire them to go to their local club, pick up a rugby ball, get into women’s rugby and be the future Red Roses.”

This World Cup triumph is the crowning glory for England.

They are unbeaten in 33 matches and have won the past four Women’s Six Nations without losing a match.

While they are on top of the world, Aldcroft knows they cannot rest on their success.

When the Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) season gets under way in late October, England will be front and centre, not only fighting for their clubs and to keep their international places in an increasing competitive field, but also because their job is not done.

“After we’ve had our celebrations, [this chapter] will close. It’s about bringing the next generation of Red Roses to light,” Aldcroft said.

“We’ll get a fresh look at girls coming into the squad and that’s what keeps us fresh and chasing. We’re very competitive people and we want to be at the top of our game.

“We’ve won the World Cup, but in a couple of weeks we’re back in the PWR and wanting to fight for our clubs. It never stops.

“We want to keep pushing and doing better and better, and that’s the same when we put on an England shirt again. We always want to push those limits.

“We have so much more to go, so many more people to inspire. That’s where it goes from here.”

  • September 28 in Chicago White Sox History: Mark Buehrle fails to win 20

September 28 in Chicago White Sox History: Mark Buehrle fails to win 20

    1902
For the second game of a doubleheader at Sportsman’s Park, the Browns and White Sox used the last day of the season to throw all non-pitchers in their game. White Sox left fielder Sam Mertes got the 10-4 win, beating St. Louis left fielder Jesse Burkett.

First baseman Frank Isbell was the “opener” for the game, pitching one inning of three-hit, two-run ball. Then Mertes took over for the next 7 2⁄3 innings! With just one earned run allowed, Mertes finished the year with a 1.17 ERA; it was the only pitching performance of his career, and earned him 0.2 WAR as a hurler.

Both teams also had unorthodox lineups. St. Louis went bananas, with some players manning four different positions during the course of the game. The White Sox didn’t swap positions in-game, but there were some uncustomary assignments: White Sox two-way player Nixey Callahan, normally a left fielder/pitcher, started at shortstop. Pitcher (and manager) Clark Griffith played left field. And Mertes himself started at catcher, then moved to the mound after one inning.

Oh, and the game ended one out early, with St. Louis fans rushed the field, apparently tiring of the unique exhibition.

For the next 110 years, this remained the only game where both winning and losing pitchers were position players. In 2012, Oriole Chris Davis beat Boston’s Darnell McDonald in a 17-inning game at Fenway Park. And until 2025 and Korey Lee, the White Sox did not have a single player who both pitched and caught in the same game, as Mertes and Isbell both did on this day.

    1920
Eight members of the 1919 White Sox Swede Risberg, Chick Gandil, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, Happy Felsch and Fred McMullin — officially became targets for trial, as a grand jury convened in Chicago to investigate their throwing the 1919 World Series (ending in a White Sox loss, five games to three, to the Cincinnati Reds). The grand jury returned five counts of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretenses and/or via a confidence game against these eight “Black Sox.”

Despite his club trailing Cleveland by just a half-game for the AL pennant, and bolstered by a confession from Cicotte, owner Charles Comiskey suspended all eight players, dooming his club in a move made for the best of the game.

The “Eight Men Out” were exonerated by a Chicago jury the next summer but were nonetheless banned for life by the baseball commissioner, Kenesaw Landis — who, ironically, was a White Sox fan.

    1932
    J. Louis Comiskey, son of Charles Comiskey and the new owner of the White Sox, made a move to try to rebuild his franchise: He paid an unheard-of sum (in those days) of $150,000 to the Philadelphia A’s for infielder Jimmy Dykes, outfielder Al Simmons and utilityman Mule Haas.

Simmons would be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953, and in three seasons with the Sox twice drove in over 100 runs. Dykes played for the White Sox for four full seasons and parts of three others, eventually managing the team for 12 full seasons beginning in 1934, and part of a 13th. He’d have five winning years, and one season at .500 in that time — the longest-tenured and (arguably) best manager in White Sox history.

Dykes also had the distinction of scoring the first-ever run in the All-Star Game, going 2-for-3 in the inaugural 1933 contest.

    1959
The White Sox team photo appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, with this headline: “Chicago’s New Champions Sit For Their Portrait.”

    1970
With a 4-3 loss at California, the White Sox lost their record 103rd game of the season, “besting” the 1932 club. Chicago had just three hits, and scored all its runs on a three-run Bill Melton blast in the seventh.

The club was in free-fall, losing their last seven of the season, 10 of 12 and 13 of 16. The 1970 team would hold the franchise mark for most losses for 54 years, until 2024.

    1997
Frank Thomas won the AL batting championship, with a .347 average. He joined Luke Appling as the only White Sox player to win a batting title (Tim Anderson won a batting title in 2019).

Thomas was one of only a handful of players in major league history with a batting title and at least 450 home runs to his credit. Thomas was also the largest player (both in height and weight) to ever win a batting crown. He had 184 hits in 530 at-bats in 1997.

    2002
With just two games left in the regular season, Mark Buehrle took the mound in Minneapolis in hopes of winning his 20th game for the first time in his career. And despite doing most everything he could to secure that win (eight innings, three earned, 10 hits, one walk and seven Ks), Buerhle fell short in a 3-2 loss.

Chicago batters managed just six hits, just one for extra bases. Still, with two outs in the eighth Buehrle could almost taste the win, leading, 2-1; but a single from Michael Restovich and homer off the bat of Bobby Kielty flipped the script. The White Sox went down weekly in the ninth, leaving Buehrle’s 124-pitch effort for naught and dropping their season record to 81-80.

Buehrle would never again pile up as many as 16 wins in a season, leaving the 20-win achievement unturned in his career.

    2003
White Sox starter Esteban Loaiza recorded his 21st win of the season, beating the Royals, 5-1. The 21 wins tied the major league record for the most wins in a season by a pitcher born in Mexico (Fernando Valenzuela, 1986). Loaiza would finish second in the Cy Young voting that season; two 1-0 losses to a last-place Tigers team probably cost him the award.

  • NFL Week 4 player props include Quentin Johnston, Brock Purdy and more

NFL Week 4 player props include Quentin Johnston, Brock Purdy and more

The bad news is Prince’s Picks (yes, my picks) have gotten progressively worse each week of the season. The good news is there’s nowhere to go but up after I just went 0-4 in Week 3. The ceiling is the roof.

Unfortunately, I can’t promise my swing back to the top(ish) will begin Sunday, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t aiming for an immediate bounce back. And to help with that, we’re going to a former embattled receiver who’s having the exact type of rebound we’re looking for.

After coming under fire for an underwhelming start to his career as a former first-rounder, Quentin Johnston leads a prolific Los Angeles Chargers passing attack with 239 receiving yards on 17.1 yards per catch and three touchdowns. I like for him to keep it up as one of my favorite picks of the week. Let’s get into those here.

    Week 3 record: 0-4

    2025 record: 3-9

Prince’s passing prop: Brock Purdy Over 31.5 attempts (Jaguars at 49ers)

    Passing prop record: 1-2

Teams aren’t having a whole lot of success passing on the Jaguars, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t trying, as the Jags defense has seen an average of 37.6 pass attempts through the first three games. In what shapes up to be another potentially close game, Purdy should near that total in his return to an offense that has attempted at least 35 passes in every game this season.

Prince’s rushing prop: Chuba Hubbard Under 51.5 yards (Panthers at Patriots)

    Rushing prop record: 0-3

Aside from battling a hamstring injury, Hubbard will be battling a tough defense that hasn’t allowed this many yards to a single running back all season.

Prince’s receiving prop: Quentin Johnston Over 48.5 yards (Chargers at Giants)

    Receiving prop record: 1-2

Johnston leads the Chargers in many receiving categories and has taken nearly an identical amount of snaps as Ladd McConkey, yet his line for this game is smaller than both McConkey and Keenan Allen. After going for over 70 yards in each of his first three games, I like him to eclipse this line against a bad Giants secondary.

Prince’s bonus prop: Brock Bowers Over 5.5 receptions (Bears at Raiders)

    Bonus prop record: 1-2

This is a little bit of a risk, as Bowers hasn’t eclipsed five catches all season. In fact, he had just five targets (for for catches) all last week. However, I’m emboldened by his matchup against a Bears defense that’s allowed the third-most catches to tight ends this season, including 13 to Jake Ferguson last week.

  • Steelers’ Skylar Thompson jumped, robbed in Ireland ahead of Week 4

Steelers’ Skylar Thompson jumped, robbed in Ireland ahead of Week 4

The Pittsburgh Steelers are dealing with a scary situation ahead of their Week 4 matchup vs. the Minnesota Vikings — as one of their quarterbacks was reportedly jumped and robbed.

Almost an hour and a half before kickoff, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Steelers backup QB and preseason hero Skylar Thompson was jumped and robbed in Dublin on Friday night, suffering minor injuries but was “OK.” Pelissero also posted a statement from Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten confirming the report but offering no additional details.

“We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin,” Lauten said. “We will have no further comment at this time as we are working with NFL security to gather more information regarding the incident.”

Signing with Pittsburgh this past January on a Reserve/Future contract, Thompson more than earned his spot on the Steelers’ roster with his preseason-MVP-esque performance. He was placed on IR following Pittsburgh’s Week 1 win over the New York Jets.

Here’s to hoping Thompson continues to make a speedy recovery, with this situation only fueling the Steelers ahead of their Week 4 matchup vs. the Vikings in Ireland.

  • đŸ”„ Sassuolo hit 2 in 12 mins đŸ˜± Udinese VAR nightmare: 2 pens denied 📾

A blistering start for Sassuolo against Udinese in the “lunch match” of the fifth round of Serie A.

It takes just 12 minutes for the home team to lead 2-0, while in the second half of the match, the Friulians protest over two penalties revoked by VAR.

The first minutes of the match are all marked Sassuolo: the Neroverdi unlock the score with Armand LaurientĂ© after just 8′ of play.

Decisive is Pinamonti’s assist for Berardi, who serves the Frenchman in open field. LaurientĂ© easily overcomes the very young Palma and beats Sava.

The doubling comes shortly after: at 12′ it’s Ismael KonĂ© who strikes.

The Frenchman is served by LaurientĂ© and once again it’s Palma who ends up in the crosshairs and concedes the decisive space.

Udinese tries to react and on two occasions a foul in the area is whistled by referee Perenzoni. On both occasions, however, the match director, called to the On Field Review, revokes his initial decision.

At 27′ there is a contact between LaurientĂ© and Zaniolo in the Neroverdi penalty area, initially sanctioned with a penalty and then transformed into an attacking foul by Udinese.

At 39′ similar situation: Solet anticipates Waluckiewicz, who commits a foul on the Frenchman, at least according to Perenzoni’s initial interpretation.

After the OFR the referee however backtracks, ruling that the Pole had intervened on the ball in a non-foul manner.

  • Manchester United and Liverpool battle for this talent

Everton are not planning to let their player go cheaply and have reportedly set his price at ÂŁ65 million.

Manchester United and Liverpool battle for this talent

According to the Daily Star, two Premier League giants, Manchester United and Liverpool, have set their sights on Everton’s central defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

At 23 years old, Branthwaite has established himself as an undisputed starter for the Toffees since the 2023/2024 season. Despite numerous transfer rumors last summer, particularly linking him to Chelsea and Tottenham, the player ultimately stayed at Goodison Park, extending his contract until 2030.

But his profile is once again turning heads. On Manchester United’s side, the potential departure of Harry Maguire, whose contract is expiring, is pushing club executives to make Branthwaite a top priority. As for Liverpool, the possible free exit of Ibrahima KonatĂ© next summer would also force the Reds to reinforce their defensive line.

  • Bengals name-dropped in Russell Wilson trade deadline speculation

Bengals name-dropped in Russell Wilson trade deadline speculation

The Cincinnati Bengals probably aren’t a fit for Russell Wilson at the NFL trade deadline despite the Joe Burrow injury.

Zac Taylor and the Bengals remain fully behind Jake Browning as the starter with Burrow out, an idea reinforced by the team signing two practice squad quarterbacks behind him and doing nothing else to imply a challenge to his spot.

But that doesn’t stop NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo from name-dropping the Bengals in a writeup about Russell Wilson at the upcoming trade deadline:

“The Bengals are currently the only team to lose their starting QB for an extended period after Joe Burrow underwent toe surgery that is expected to sideline him at least three months. A total of 59 quarterbacks started games in 2024, however.”

RELATED: Bengals’ Joe Burrow injury timeline gets multiple new reports

This is by no means a report or link between the Bengals and New York Giants when it comes to Wilson. But it’s pretty telling that the Bengals get a mention first
and pretty obvious that they would be a super-ideal landing spot for a veteran like Wilson, who wants to contend as his career winds down.

As for Wilson, he just got benched in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart in New York. He’s bound to be available at the deadline later this season, so perhaps if Browning were to suffer an injury or dramatic performance falloff, it would be something to watch.

  • ‘He is one of the best in SA football’ – Abdeslam Ouaddou hails Pirates star

Ouaddou praises Pirates star after thumping Lioli

    Photo: Lefty Shivambu/ Gallo Images

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou reserved a special praise for midfielder Sipho Mbule after their dominant 4-0 win over Lioli of Lesotho.

The Soweto giants dispatched the Lesotho champions 7-0 on aggregate in a two-legged affair of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round.

In-form Tshepang Moremi scored a brace, while striker Yanela Mbuthuma also got a double at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

While the attackers took the spotlight, Ouaddou waxed lyrical about Mbule’s exploits in the heart of midfield, labelling him as one of the best players in South African football.

“I think Sipho had a good performance, it’s good for him to have time like that. And what I like is that I see a boy smiling, enjoying his game and that’s what we want,” said the Bucs mentor.

“It’s a fantastic player, let’s say he is one of the best players in South African football and when I see him happy, I am happy.

Ouaddou went on to pinpoint that ‘Master Chef’, as the player is fondly known, made an impact in an unusual no.6 role after tactical tweaks in the second stanza.

“I can say that it was a bit difficult for him in the first half because to play with a low block in a very small space was not easy,” he added.

“After we gave him the opportunity to play a little bit lower, when he had more space – we saw the real Mbule and what he is able to do. So, I am very happy about his performance and in general the performance of all the boys.
