Without CeeDee Lamb, the Cowboys showed themselves to be completely ineffective against the a Chicago Bears squad who’s been hanging around the bottom of most power rankings.
The four-time Pro Bowler is trying to make sure he’s back in the lineup when a legitimate Super Bowl contender comes to town next weekend.
Lamb was hurt midway through the first quarter of the team’s 31-14 loss, with replays indicating an ankle injury suffered on a rare rushing play out of the backfield for the wide receiver. Lamb attempted to re-enter the game but was unable to continue; he finished the day with zero catches, just the second time in his career that has happened.
Per head coach Brian Schotteneheimer, Lamb sustained an ankle sprain, though it is not yet known whether it is of the low variety or the more serious high ankle sprain, which could keep require multiple weeks of rest.
Lamb is set to undergo further testing on the ankle, but he was not seen wearing any sort of boot or bracing device after the game went final.
After Sunday’s game, the 26-year-old told reporters he “for sure, absolutely” feels like he’ll be good to go in Week 4 when the Green Bay Packers visit AT&T Stadium in a Sunday night showdown.
“This was one of those protect-me-from-myself type of deals,” he explained.
Team owner Jerry Jones echoed that sentiment, saying that the injury is not as serious- or as long-term- as it might have looked at first.
“Let’s just keep our fingers crossed,” Jones added.
Though the Dallas offense had done nothing of note before Lamb’s injury, they were rendered thoroughly one-dimensional without him on the field. Quarterback Dak Prescott was rather accurate, going 31-of-40 through the air, but the attack managed just 5.9 yards per pass play. Tight end Jake Ferguson led the Cowboys with 13 catches for 82 yards; George Pickens logged five receptions for 68 yards and a score.
“You see what a difference he can make in a ball game,” Jones said of Lamb from the tunnel at Soldier Field.
The Packers certainly saw. And after a gut-wrenching loss of their own, Micah Parsons and the Green Bay defense will be licking their chops if it turns out Lamb can’t be ready to go Sunday night.
