Newcastle host Arsenal on Sunday in a tricky fixture for Eddie Howe’s low-scoring side, who will be hoping to take some of their Carabao Cup form back into the Premier League after thrashing Bradford 4-1.

But while the defending champions made light work of their cupf fixture, three goals in five league games, despite 54 shots, is a worrying statistic for the Magpies and one they may struggle to improve when facing Mikel Arteta’s well-drilled defensive side.

Arteta was criticised for an overly cautious approach in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the weekend but defended his tactics, and as Newcastle have shown strength of their own in defence – having kept the most clean sheets in the top flight so far this season – this could be something of a borefest.

Second-placed Arsenal have already had a raft of injuries with Noni Madueke the latest ruled out, but there will be little for Newcastle to capitalise on with Martin Odegaard expected to be back in contention and Bukayo Saka back from a hamstring injury.

Team news

Newcastle will be missing summer signing Jacob Ramsey, who is expected to be out until next month with an ankle injury, while striker Yoane Wissa – signed to replace Alexander Isak – was injured on international duty and remains on the sidelines. Fabian Schar will also miss out after sustaining a head injury against Barcelona in the Champions League.

But Anthony Gordon returns in a boost to the side after serving a three-game suspension thanks to his sending off against Liverpool last month.

Arsenal have lost Madueke to a knee problem for an expected six to eight weeks, with the ex-Chelsea man joining Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz in the treatment room, but William Saliba and Saka both returned last weekend in a boost for the title-chasing squad. Martin Odegaard could be in line to feature two after missing three games with a shoulder issue.

Eberechi Eze scored his first goal for the Gunners since a high-profile summer move in their 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Port Vale this week, and could be rewarded with a starting berth after he was benched against Manchester City.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Four weeks ago, then-No. 8 Alabama fell to an unranked Florida State team in Week 1. And critics didn’t hold back. Coach Kalen DeBoer, in his second year leading the Crimson Tide, was viewed as questionable to make it through the season.

Four weeks later, No. 17 Alabama delivered a 24-21 victory at No. 5 Georgia, shattering the Bulldogs’ 33-game win streak at home dating back to 2019. As it turns out, the Week 1 loss to Florida State may have been exactly what the Crimson Tide (3-1) needed to gain an edge, build an identity and go on a run.

“There’s two things you can do when things are coming down on you a little bit: you can back yourself in the corner, or you can fight,” DeBoer said, reflecting on the turnaround since Aug. 30. “These guys, you know, made up their minds. They are going to fight. The staff is doing the same thing. I think that was where it started, but it’s just continuing to build.”

Quarterback Ty Simpson, the Crimson Tide’s new leader, knows the loss was a turning point for a team now full of promise.

“We know that we didn’t play up to our standard in Week 1,” Simpson said. “We just came back as a team, right, and were like, ‘All right, what are we going to do now? That’s over. Do we want to be known as the team who doesn’t finish, doesn’t sustain competitive stamina, or are we going to play with a chip on our shoulder?’”

Simpson threw for 276 yards, two touchdowns and ran one in for a score against Georgia, helping Alabama maintain the lead through all four quarters and control the game from start to finish. It was a well-rounded, statement-making win, the kind that puts a target on Alabama’s back moving forward.

“We got to make sure we don’t forget, you know, that that chip on our shoulder was what kind of got this momentum going. Got to understand what it took mentally, physically, emotionally today to be able to sustain from start to finish,” DeBoer said. “Can we sustain the energy? Can we sustain the passion? And you know not just for the season, for the game, but each play.”

Jimmy Crute made it look easy in a co-main event appearance last night (Sat., Sept. 27, 2025) at UFC Perth LIVE on ESPN+ from inside RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, shutting out light heavyweight Ivan Erslan with a first-round submission (neck crank).

This was a big opportunity for both fighters after a pre-fight cancelation propelled their 205-pound matchup into the co-headlining spot. Crute carried more pressure to perform in front of his home crowd, but it was Erslan’s third — and possibly last — chance to earn a win inside of the Octagon.

It didn’t take Crute long to implement his strong grappling game and drag Erslan to the canvas. Erslan is a striker and doesn’t really have much of a ground game, so he was quickly outmatched. Crute flowed with the action and eventually transitioned to Erslan’s back, securing a neck crank (which looked a whole lot like a Camel Clutch) in the process and forcing the Croatian fighter to tap.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — JaCobian Morgan threw for 337 yards and two touchdowns, Donerio Davenport rushed for two touchdowns and Jackson State dominated the second half to open Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a 38-13 victory over Southern in the Boombox Classic on Saturday night.

The Tigers (3-1) led 17-13 at halftime after Morgan threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Naylon Dupree with five seconds to play. Kam Sallis had intercepted an Ashton Strother pass at the 3 with 1:41 to go and then the Tigers, stopped on their 10, got a break when a Southern player ran into the punter.

From there, Jackson State outgained the Jaguars 293-107 in the second half.

Morgan was 21-of-31 passing, adding an 82-yard touchdown connection with Nate Rembert to close the scoring. Ahmad Miller rushed for 101 yards and Rembert finished with 102 on five catches.

Trey Holly ran for 147 yards for the Jaguars (1-4), with his 73-yard touchdown run producing a 13-7 lead in the second quarter.

Davenport’s second short TD made it 24-13 midway through the third and Travis Terrell Jr. added a short TD run in the middle of the fourth for a 30-13 lead.

But the exchange set the tone of the day. McIlroy lost his cool towards the end of his morning foursomes win alongside Lowry, swearing at American fans during a heated moment on the 16th fairway.

With some members of the crowd fuelled by all-day drinking, things became more heated in the afternoon fourballs.

The atmosphere simmered over the opening few holes before becoming a tinderbox on the par-five fourth green.

McIlroy backed off a putt for an eagle three after a shout disrupted his concentration. He missed his effort but Lowry holed his chance – and then erupted with a passionate and pointed celebration towards the offender.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Dorsey Benefield had a 30-yard pick-6 eight seconds into the game, Jaden Craig threw for 317 yards and tied his career-high with four passing touchdowns, and Harvard took down Brown 41-7 on Saturday.

The Crimson (2-0, 1-0 Ivy) has won its Ivy League opener in 22 of the past 24 seasons, with 21 of those wins coming against Brown (1-1, 0-1).

Cam Henry caught three passes for 81 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown reception with two minutes to go in the first half. Seamus Gilmartin, Dean Boyd, and Ryan Osborne also had touchdown catches.

DJ Gordon added 73 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown for Harvard.

Austin-Jake Guillory, Ty Bartrum joined Benefield with interceptions, and Riley Jenne had the game’s only sack. The Harvard defense held Brown to 157 yards of total offense.

John Perdue and Miles Brophy had 14 and 12 total tackles, respectively, for the Bears.

The Crimson improved to 91-31-2 against Brown, and have lost just three games to the Bears since 2000.
