An Avocado League title is on the line on Friday as Mission Hills hosts La Costa Canyon in a battle of top-25 football teams in California that both enter 5-0.

The Avocado League is even deeper than usual in 2025 and is loaded with legitimate contenders, but with No. 22 Mission Hills and No. 24 La Costa Canyon both off to brilliant 5-0 starts, it’s hard to tell if there are even 20 teams in California that can beat them. Whichever team wins this tossup can’t afford to sleepwalk through the rest of conference play but will be in fantastic position to complete an undefeated regular season. Bring your popcorn.

Two of California’s top high school football programs – both of which enter unbeaten – go at it on Friday in the state’s No. 1 game of the week as De La Salle hosts Cathedral Catholic.

During a week in which the onset of league play dominates most storylines, the No. 1 game of the week is a final NorCal-versus-SoCal chess match before state championships bring more in mid-December, and both teams come in unbeaten. At No. 7 in the state, De La Salle has unsurprisingly been in national rankings discussions for a few weeks now, whereas Cathedral Catholic wasn’t on the national radar to start the season but wasted no time in pushing the envelope. Regardless of who wins, De La Salle is the favorite to emerge as the NorCal Open Division regional champion and Cathedral Catholic still has to worry about Lincoln in both Western League play and perhaps the CIF-SDS Open Division playoffs. But the winner has a great chance to go 10-0, especially with De La Salle off to a strong start in what’s otherwise a down year for most of the North Coast Section. And whichever team wins also has to like their chances of being ranked top-25 in the nation a week from now.

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee, Oct. 3 — The Baylor [Chattanooga, TN] Red Raiders will visit the McCallie [Chattanooga, TN] Blue Tornado Friday night in a battle of Tennessee’s top two high school football teams. McCallie has the lead in the second quarter, 14-7.

McCallie enters the game 5-1 having already pulled off one of the season’s big upsets when they beat the Mission Viejo [CA] Diablos, 25-14, on September 19. Mission Viejo was ranked in the SN Top 25 at the time.

The Blue Tornado are currently ranked No. 45 in the SN Composite Rankings, but the undefeated visitors from The Baylor School are ranked even higher at No. 35. Baylor enters the game 5-0.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Garrick Higgo kept his ball in play and took advantage of enough birdie chances for a 6-under 66 on Friday to build a one-shot lead in the Sanderson Farms Championship, a Fall Series event that feels like a new start to the South African.

Higgo ran off three straight birdies late in his round at the Country Club of Jackson, one of them the short par-4 15th where he nearly holed his bunker shot and tapped in for birdie.

He was at 13-under 131, one shot ahead of Eric Cole (67) and Taylor Montgomery, who had nine birdies in a 10-hole stretch — the exception was a bogey. He holed a 25-foot birdie on his final hole for a 63 to boost his chances of keeping a PGA Tour card for 2026.

Only the top 100 keep full PGA Tour cards after the Fall Series end in November. Five tournaments are left on the schedule.

Cole had 10 birdies in the opening round, offset by a double bogey late in his round. He added seven more birdies on a calm, sunny afternoon to get in the final round as Cole goes after his first PGA Tour title.

Danny Walker (68) was two shots behind in an important week for him. Walker is at No. 104 in the FedEx Cup. Vince Whaley (No. 102 in the standings) had another 67 and Tom Kim (No. 99) saved par from a bunker on the 18th for a 66. They were three shots behind.

“I’ve made a bunch of cuts and feel like I’ve played good the last six months,” Whaley said. “It’s getting harder and harder out here, and you need those big finishes, and I don’t feel like I’ve had that.”

Higgo already has one PGA Tour win this year, a week after the Masters in an opposite-field event in the Dominican Republic. But that nearly felt like the end. He suffered a labrum injury that all but wrecked the rest of the season.

Higgo debated having surgery on his hip after the regular season, but realized he could handle it with a change in his fitness routine. He is lifting less and being smarter.

“It wasn’t hurting me in my swing, but walking made it really bad, and then it would pinch the next day,” Higgo said. “So just figuring out how I can avoid that. I’ve changed the way I work out, just being a bit more clever with that, I would say.”

He said the pain level is now 1 out of 10, though he still fatigues quicker than usual. But he feels like he’s back on the right track.

Higgo played in the final group with Scottie Scheffler at the Procore Championship, where he tied for seventh. He’s in the midst of another good week at the Sanderson Farms.

Unlike most players in the field, his FedEx Cup rank is of little consequence. Having won the Puntacana Championship, he has his PGA Tour card locked up and is in The Players Championship. The Fall Series events no longer get a Masters invitation.

The final round with Scheffler was an eye-opener watching how the world’s No. 1 player operates and eventually wins.

“I couldn’t tell you how much I learned, but I learned so much just by watching,” Higgo said. “He’s an inspiration for all of us. He’s set the bar so high. It’s just phenomenal how high his skill level is.”

When Corbyn Fordham committed to Ohio State last November, the Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles School tight end did so just months before the Buckeyes captured a national championship. He saw history, believed in the fit for his game, and built strong relationships in Columbus.

But the three-star prospect is also a Florida State legacy, and the Seminoles never stopped pushing. After taking some time to think about his decision, Fordham flipped his commitment from Ohio State to Florida State, following in the footsteps of his father, former Seminole offensive lineman Todd Fordham.

“Florida State has been on me from the beginning,” Fordham told Rivals. “It has been a process, but they came in, they came on strong, and I like where they are heading. Coach Norvell is bringing the team back. They made some coaching changes, they put the work in, and they are bouncing back.”

Fordham cited both faith and family in making the difficult decision.

“This was a tough decision and something I have been praying about. God told me staying close to home was best for me. Ohio State is a great program, they are one of the best, and I love the coaches, but after praying about it, staying close to home and going to Florida State is best for me.”

The opportunity to carry on his father’s legacy added even more weight to the move.

“My dad played there, and that is big for me,” Fordham said. “Carrying his name will help me grow. I like how they use players and play the guys who work. I know players there, I talk to players there, and it’s true how they play the guys that put in the work. Coach Norvell is a great coach who can develop kids and put Florida State in competition for championships. I believe in what coach Norvell is doing.”

Fordham becomes another in-state win for Norvell and his staff, keeping one of Florida’s most respected programs stocked with homegrown talent.

The Baltimore Ravens have ruled star quarterback Lamar Jackson out for their Week 5 matchup against the Houston Texans.

Jackson was not expected to play after leaving his last game with a hamstring injury. He did not practice this week and will be replaced by backup Cooper Rush. Tyler Huntley will be elevated from the practice squad to serve as the QB2 on game day.

The Ravens’ other confirmed absences were also expected. Chidobe Awuzie, Marlon Humphrey, and Roquan Smith missed practice all week, while Ricard has been sidelined since the beginning of the regular season. Baltimore also had no intention of rushing Jones on the field after a long recovery from shoulder surgery in March.

The Ravens’ questionable players will bring a lot of uncertainty into Sunday’s contest. Losing Hamilton could push an already-teetering defense over the edge, and Stanley’s absence would make life even harder for Rush.

However, Baltimore did take several players off the injury report on Friday: Travis Jones, Tyler Linderbaum, Brent Urban, Kyle Van Noy, and Nate Wiggins. The return of Jones and Van Noy will bolster a Ravens front that has been completely overmatched in their last two games. While Linderbaum has not played his best ball to start the year, he will be a key factor in helping Rush at the line of scrimmage on Sunday. Wiggins’ elbow injury looked much worse when he left the game in Kansas City, but he quickly progressed to full participation and will be ready to go against Houston.

The Texans are significantly healthier than the Ravens on both sides of the ball. Here is their final injury report and game designations.
