The Denver Broncos arguably have the most notable quarterbacks coach in the NFL, and other clubs have taken notice.
Davis Webb, 30, retired from his role as a backup NFL quarterback in 2023 to join Sean Payton’s staff as a coach. Webb was essentially serving in a player-coach role during his time with the New York Giants, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, and Payton loves helping former players transition to coaching.
Webb is beloved by players and coaches in Denver, and the Broncos gave him a big promotion (and raise) this offseason to keep him on Payton’s staff. He now has the title of offensive pass game coordinator & quarterbacks coach, but it might be hard for Denver to keep him around beyond the 2025 season.
The Tennessee Titans are the first NFL team with a 2026 head coach opening, and Davis has already been linked to that job.
“I’ve got an interesting name for you that’s a little off the radar right now,” NFL reporter Albert Breer said during a recent interview with 440 Sports. “And that’s the quarterback’s coach in Denver, Davis Webb, who is extremely well thought of. Who’s a great quarterbacks guy. … I think he’s something that could come in and galvanize a place pretty quickly.”
This, of course, seems to just be dot-connecting from Breer at this point, but it would not be surprising to see Webb get head coach interest in the not-too-distant future. It would be a big jump for Webb to go straight from position coach to head coach without a stint as an offensive coordinator, but we can’t rule out that possibility.
Payton calls the plays for the Broncos, but Webb does have some preseason experience in that role. And if he did jump from QBs coach to head coach, Webb could hire an experienced coordinator to call plays. Such a scenario is still at least months away, though. Denver has 11 games remaining on the 2025 schedule, and there’s no danger of losing Webb before the offseason. But at some point down the road, Webb will likely draw serious interest for a big promotion from his current role with the Broncos.
