Bengals name-dropped in Russell Wilson trade deadline speculation

The Cincinnati Bengals probably aren’t a fit for Russell Wilson at the NFL trade deadline despite the Joe Burrow injury.

Zac Taylor and the Bengals remain fully behind Jake Browning as the starter with Burrow out, an idea reinforced by the team signing two practice squad quarterbacks behind him and doing nothing else to imply a challenge to his spot.

But that doesn’t stop NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo from name-dropping the Bengals in a writeup about Russell Wilson at the upcoming trade deadline:

“The Bengals are currently the only team to lose their starting QB for an extended period after Joe Burrow underwent toe surgery that is expected to sideline him at least three months. A total of 59 quarterbacks started games in 2024, however.”

This is by no means a report or link between the Bengals and New York Giants when it comes to Wilson. But it’s pretty telling that the Bengals get a mention first…and pretty obvious that they would be a super-ideal landing spot for a veteran like Wilson, who wants to contend as his career winds down.

As for Wilson, he just got benched in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart in New York. He’s bound to be available at the deadline later this season, so perhaps if Browning were to suffer an injury or dramatic performance falloff, it would be something to watch.
