Dodgers notes: Blake Treinen, Roki Sasaki, Clayton Kershaw

Emmet Sheehan dazzled on the mound against the San Francisco Giants, twirling seven shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out 10. Once he exited, the Dodgers faced an all too familiar problem with their bullpen losing grasp of the lead and eventually handing the victory to the opposing team.

Blake Treinen was the latest culprit of the Dodgers bullpen issues, as he continues to mire in a horrific month of September. His ERA has inflated to a 5.55 clip after beginning the month at 3.00, and he has been handed a loss in five of his nine September appearances.

His confidence, as Dave Roberts noted after Sunday’s loss, might play a factor into Treinen’s struggles this month, and he still has optimism in Treinen turning things around, per Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times.

“I’ve got to trust what I’m seeing, and not solely bet on the person or track record,” Roberts said of Treinen, who is 0-5 with a 11.57 ERA in seven innings this month. “We all need to see a couple good outings but most importantly, I want to see his confidence up. And to be quite honest, I think that right now he’s just not as confident in himself as I am in him.”

Roki Sasaki will make his return on Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mike DiGiovanna of the Orange County Register reports that Sasaki’s role for the postseason will come out of the bullpen, but his final stretch in the regular season will prove if he will be used for single inning appearances or long relief outings.

“The first thing is you have to see how he responds to something he’s never done,” Roberts said, “Looking at the Thursday-Sunday, two days in between, it’s probably one-inning bursts. But if it does happen, the postseason is very unpredictable.”

Clayton Kershaw had one last message for Dodgers fans prior to Sunday’s game, writes Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.

“Thank you guys so much,” Kershaw said, getting the speaking duties as he heads toward retirement. “Thank you for everything. And remember, we’ve got another month left. We’ll see you at the end of October.”

Matthew Stafford: I have no concerns about how we’ll respond

There was a lot for the Rams to like about the first 31 minutes of Sunday’s game in Philadelphia.

After giving up an early touchdown, the Rams scored on six straight possessions to take a 26-7 lead with 14 minutes left in the third quarter. The rest of the game followed a very different script, however.

The Eagles scored two touchdowns before the quarter was over to make things more interesting and then blocked a field goal in the fourth quarter to set up a touchdown catch by DeVonta Smith with 1:48 left to play. Quarterback Matthew Stafford drove the Rams for a game-winning field goal attempt on the final play, but Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis blocked the kick and returned it for a touchdown that putt a celebratory capper on the 33-26 win.

It was a rather brutal collapse for the Rams, but Stafford told reporters that he’s not worried about the Rams bouncing back from how things played out.

“I got no questions or no concerns about how we’ll respond,” Stafford said. “Bunch of guys that care about each other, care about doing the stuff the right way. Trust that process that we have week in and week out going to work. Come in with the same mindset whether we won this game or lost this game.”

The 3-0 Colts will be visiting the Rams next weekend and that will give Stafford and company a chance to show that there’s no lingering effects from how things went off the rails on Sunday.

  • NBA training camp; Storylines that will shape preseason and beyong

NBA training camp; Storylines that will shape preseason and beyong

    play

The NBA is already nearly back.

Five teams — the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Pheonix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans — will report for their training camps this week. They’re the teams that will be playing preseason games outside of North America.

The rest of the association’s teams will report next week.

All of which means it’s time to assess the biggest storylines that will shape training camp, preseason, and the season beyond. That also means teams will be coming for the Oklahoma City Thunder, the reigning NBA champions.

Here are eight storylines to watch headed into the start of training camp:

What will the Lakers look like with the team seemingly phasing down its relationship with LeBron James?

When LeBron James issued a statement over the summer indicating that he intended to compete for an NBA title. It raised questions about the direction the Lakers would be taking, with Luka Dončić taking over as the face of the franchise. Still, for Los Angeles to compete in a stacked West, it will need both players to feed off each other — even if Dončić is to dictate the direction of the team. It’s a lot to ask from coach JJ Reddick, who also needs to see if DeAndre Ayton answers L.A.’s lack of presence in the low block.

Is the East a two-team race?

With so many injuries to key players in the Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers and Knicks appear to be the two front runners. New York will be implementing the culture and style of new coach Mike Brown, and Cleveland will try to build on a wildly successful first campaign under Kenny Atkinson. Both teams made moderate improvements — the Knicks added Jordan Clarkson for a spark off the bench and the Cavs brought in Lonzo Ball and Larry Nance Jr. — so the onus will be on established veterans to elevate them to a deep run.

How will the Clippers manage the Kawhi Leonard distraction?

The circumstantial evidence against the Clippers keeps mounting, and it paints owner Steve Ballmer and star forward Kawhi Leonard in a poor light. And, as the NBA-backed investigation continues to look into whether Los Angeles circumvented the salary cap, the Clippers might ultimately face very steep penalties. The Clippers were already in a delicate situation — they are an aging roster with players who sometimes battle injury issues — so adding the Leonard complication bears watching in what might be their final season to compete with this build.

Can the Celtics stay competitive in a transitional season?

Mainstays from their championship season (Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porziņģis) are gone and six-time All-Star Jayson Tatum (Achilles) will miss the entire season. But the Celtics still have plenty of talent in Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, and new addition Anfernee Simons is a breakout candidate. In a wide-open East, can Boston stay relevant? Brown will need to blossom as the unquestioned No. 1 option.

The Timberwolves have made consecutive conference finals appearances. Do they have enough to break through?

It has become clear that for Minnesota to break through, Anthony Edwards will need to assert himself into the Most Valuable Player conversation. At times, when defenses and the game dictate, Edwards has deferred to his teammates. The Timberwolves need him to confound opponents and take on more than he ever has in the offense. Losing Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Hawks) will certainly hurt their defense, so other players like Terrence Shannon Jr. will need to step up.

Will there be a hangover for the OKC Thunder?

They kept their core intact and remain an incredibly young and efficient team — and one that does not shy away from defensive effort, either. Mark Daigneault coached his team consistently and allows the Thunder to play within their style. But wining in the NBA is very difficult; no team has won consecutive titles in the last seven seasons. It will be fascinating to see if Oklahoma City can maintain this focus and intensity after reaching the highest levels of the game.

What will we see out of Cooper Flagg?

The reality is that the Mavericks are at a disadvantage with Kyrie Irving likely sidelined for the entire season. But this will also present an opportunity for No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg to immediately assume a massive role in Dallas. Fans should nonetheless temper expectations, though Flagg figures to be a favorite to coast to Rookie of the Year honors. The most positive outcome would be if Flagg flashes consistency, efficiency and an ability to score from all three levels.

Which playoff teams might be due for a regression?

Every year, there are teams that were fixtures in the playoff picture in the season previous that end up falling off. The Lakers, given their uncertainty with how they handle LeBron James, might be one of those teams. The Warriors, who suddenly might be seeing their window close, need to prove that their offense is more than just Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. Could other teams slide in the standings?

Will the KD experiment work in Houston?

The splashy offseason trade makes the Rockets, who were already quite deep and talented, instant title contenders. But it takes a lot of work to incorporate a new star like Kevin Durant to seamlessly assimilate into a system. Ime Udoka is a coach who has managed personalities and he isn’t shy about encouraging his team to play with swagger and confidence. The Rockets have tremendous length and athleticism on defense. They’ll be appointment viewing.

  • Seve Ballesteros’ legendary Ryder Cup shot: A first-hand account

Seve Ballesteros’ legendary Ryder Cup shot: A first-hand account

    play

    • Seve Ballesteros hit a legendary 3-wood from a bunker on the 18th hole during the 1983 Ryder Cup.
    • The shot, which Jack Nicklaus called one of the greatest in Ryder Cup history, helped Ballesteros tie his match against Fuzzy Zoeller.
    • Veteran reporter Craig Dolch was unintentionally captured in a famous photo of the moment.
    • The 1983 Ryder Cup, narrowly won by the U.S., had much smaller crowds than the modern event but the set the stage for the competitive era.

It’s been called one of the greatest shots in Ryder Cup history.

That’s what Jack Nicklaus said about Seve Ballesteros’ 3-wood out of the bunker at the 18th hole in the 1983 Ryder Cup at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.

Michael O’Bryon’s picture of Seve’s shot in Sports Illustrated was a classic, too — Ballesteros intently looking at the ball after his usual thrash of the club.

I ran across the photo two years ago and stopped when I looked closely. Who was the guy standing intently behind Ballesteros? Me?

    Not 100 percent sure.

This we know: Ballesteros had snap-hooked his drive at 18 and hit a 4-iron that barely reached the fairway bunker. Ballesteros had been 3-up against Fuzzy Zoeller after 11 holes, but was now tied and in danger of losing the match to Zoeller, who had a flip wedge for his third shot in one of the tightest Ryder Cups in a long time.

Ballesteros studied his shot, his biggest issue a huge lip in the bunker directly on his line to the green. His caddie, Nick De Paul, figured his player would lay up with a 5-iron. But Seve didn’t lay up often.

    Seve’s best ever shot

The shot Jack Nicklaus called the “greatest I ever saw”.
The myth of Seve’s three wood bunker shot on the final hole of the 1983 Ryder Cup has lingered for decades. We spoke to Seve’s caddie from that day to hear the story behind one of the greatest shots ever.

Posted by GOLFTV on Tuesday, June 9, 2020

Tres de madero,” Seve said, indicating the 3-wood.

I remember standing directly behind Ballesteros when he took the 3-wood out, wondering if he had lost his mind. Nicklaus, the U.S. captain, might have wondered the same thing.

Nicklaus was sitting in a cart to the left of Ballesteros when Seve suddenly motioned for him to move up the hill. He was going to play a 50-yard cut shot. With a persimmon 3-wood. Out of a bunker. On the 18th hole of the Ryder Cup.

Somehow, Ballesteros hit this magical cut that found the edge of the green, and he eventually two-putted for par to tie Zoeller in one of the most thrilling halves in Ryder Cup history.

It was an amazing moment to witness, and even more amazing for me if I somehow Forrest-Gumped my way into a piece of golf history. I wasn’t sure if it was me or Ballesteros’ teammate, Nick Faldo, because of our similar physiques. (This is the only time in my life I could have been confused with Sir Nick on the golf course.)

“I think it was you, Craig,” said O’Bryon, who lives in Fort Lauderdale and was shooting his first Ryder Cup for SI. “Your shirt is a different color than Seve’s and it looks like you have a media badge on your left shoulder. There wasn’t a large crowd on 18 at that point.”

Times have certainly changed in the 40 years since the U.S. barely won this Ryder Cup, 14 ½ – 13 ½, thanks to Lanny Wadkins’ wedge to tap-in distance at 18.

The crowds at PGA National were a fraction of what the gallery will be at this weekend’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York. Then again, the U.S. team had won 12 of the last 13 Ryder Cups entering ‘83, the other ending in a tie, so these competitions had become predictable. No more.

Much has changed in the last four decades. One positive about not being at Bethpage Black: I don’t have to worry about ruining a picture-perfect moment in golf history.

  • Barcelona confront nine-figure reality in Erling Haaland pursuit

Barcelona confront nine-figure reality in Erling Haaland pursuit

Barcelona’s interest in Erling Haaland is no secret in recent weeks with several reports linking the striker to Camp Nou.

The Catalan club is already planning beyond Robert Lewandowski, whose importance remains high but whose future is limited by age.

Reportedly, there is a consensus among Barcelona’s sporting department that Haaland represents the perfect long-term successor, capable of defining their attack for the next decade.

Haaland’s record explains why Barcelona are watching the 25-year-old so closely .

The Norwegian has delivered relentlessly at Manchester City where he has already amassed 131 goals in 152 appearances as of September 22.

His impact has been immediate and sustained which could be clearly seen by two Premier League titles (2022/2023, 2023/2024) and a Champions League (2022/2023) crown in his debut season.

Barcelona’s technical staff recognize his consistency at the highest level, considering him a rare asset who could transform their attacking identity.

Yet alongside admiration some questions remain about how such a monumental move could realistically be executed, especially since Man City have let known their price tag for the star.

What are Man City demands for Barcelona target?

According to the Fichajes, Manchester City has placed a valuation above £150m [$202m] on Haaland, complicating any potential negotiations.

Barcelona, who are weighed down by financial restrictions could struggle to meet such demands outright.

But Catalan side are considering staggered payments or player-exchange deals, yet City’s firm stance leaves little room for flexibility.

According to some reports Hansi Flick’s side are also considering a move for Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane and Barcelona sporting director will attempt to test the German club’s resolve when the Summer transfer window opens next year.

  • Why Robert Sanchez will not miss any Chelsea league games despite being sent off

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will not miss any Premier League games despite being sent off at the weekend.

It was a stupid decision from Sanchez when really he should have just let Mbeumo score rather than take the sending off because there was a whole game left ahead of him where Chelsea could have got back in it with 11 men on the field still.

It is very typical of Sanchez during his career to make silly decisions like this, despite his clear rise in form since the end of last season.

However, despite being sent off, Sanchez wont really miss any games for Chelsea at all, and here is why….

Robert Sanchez trudges off. (Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty Images)

As explained by Sports Illustrated, Sanchez will only receive a one-game ban. He was sent off for the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity, not violent conduct.

Players are normally suspended for at least three matches if they’re sent off in the Premier League for violent conduct.

Sánchez is only banned for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup third-round clash at Lincoln City on Tuesday night, meaning he will be back available for their next league game against Brighton.

Technically he wont miss any games because he would have been highly unlikely to have started against Lincoln anyway, with Filip Jorgensen expected to be the starter in this competition.

Atlanta Braves News: Spencer Strider, Braves win 8th straight game, More

For the first time since 1982, the Braves have won 8 straight games while also scoring 5+ runs each game. It seems for the first time in more than a year, every aspect of the Braves team is excelling at the right time. Yes, it may not be the most opportune time for next year’s draft odds, but it is fun to see the team end a difficult 2025 season on a positive note.

While several Braves are playing great baseball at the moment, few, if any, are more significant to see playing well than Spencer Strider. He has allowed 3 or less earned runs in 5 straight starts, and for the first time in June, he has earned back to back wins over his last two starts. While Strider still is a ways away from the level of starter he was before his injury, he seems to be figuring out how to find success while also remaining healthy for the off-season ahead.

The Braves claimed catcher Chuckie Robinson off waivers from the Dodgers. They moved relief pitcher Daysbel Hernandez to the 60-day IL as a result.

After having the best game of his career to date, Nacho Alvarez was held out of the lineup on Sunday due to a minor cut on his hand. It is not expected to be serious.

The Reds completed a weekend sweep of the Cubs and now hold the final Wild Card spot in the NL over the Mets. The Reds own the tiebreaker between the two teams.

The Brewers placed SP Brandon Woodruff on the Il with a lat injury. It is unknown what this means for his postseason availability.

  • Miami (OH) drops 41-38 heartbreaker to UNLV

Miami (OH) drops 41-38 heartbreaker to UNLV

Entering Week 4, the Miami (OH) RedHawks were one of 11 teams vying for their first win of the 2025 campaign.

Miami had been twice-tested in Big Ten country, playing Wisconsin and Rutgers competitively through two-and-a-half quarters before fading toward the finish. On Saturday, Chuck Martin’s team suited up in front of its home fans at Yager Stadium for the first time since Nov. 19, 2024.

Everything looked upward for the RedHawks, which never trailed all game and entered the fourth quarter clinging onto a 38-24 advantage. But late turnovers, combined with an explosive UNLV offense flipped the script. The Rebels not only stormed back from the two-touchdown hole — they set up a chip shot 23-yard field goal for Ramon Villela with 15 seconds remaining. Villela’s kick lifted UNLV to a 4-0 record, remaining unbeaten in the Dan Mullen era while Miami fell to 0-3 as one of five remaining winless FBS teams.

The first-ever meeting between the MAC and Mountain West programs proved chaotic. There were five combined turnovers, three non-offensive touchdowns, and two 14-point deficits erased in an eventful three-and-a-half hour affair. The chaos initiated in the first quarter when Miami outside linebacker Corban Hondru perfectly jump a route near the sideline. Exactly one play later, Dequan Finn found running back Kenny Tracy completed unaccounted for on a 29-yard wheel route for a touchdown. Finn and Tracy continued their explosive playmaking — which Miami severely lacked in the first two weeks — driving 91 yards down the field. When the RedHawks flew to the UNLV 3-yard line, Finn delivered his second touchdown pass of the quarter to Washington transfer Keith Reynolds.

The former MAC champion quarterback produced a scalding start, firing 7-of-11 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. However, the 12th pass in the early second quarter would completely alter the trajectory of the game, in a multitude of ways. On a 3rd and 13, Finn rolled out and launched a deep shot, going airborne as he delivered the strike. UNLV’s Mumu Bin-Wahad led with the helmet, made contact with Finn’s lower body and completely flipped the seventh-year senior quarterback. The pass was picked by FBS interceptions leader Aamaris Brown who secured his fourth of the season, and for the second time, he raced it to the end zone.

Finn was shaken up on the play and never returned. Head coach Chuck Martin did not provide a definitive status on the quarterback’s timetable to return but said, “He’s going to be fine in the long run.” Down their experienced leader, the RedHawks turned to Henry Hesson who started the 2023 Cure Bowl at quarterback. The early offensive success continued under the backup, and Miami found itself right back in UNLV territory on a deep shot to Kam Perry. Upon reaching there, Hesson perfectly timed a shovel pass to Tracy who scored his second receiving touchdown of the day. The running back enjoyed the best overall showing in his six years in Oxford, accounting for 104 rushing yards and 84 receiving yards along with his two scores.

Miami led 24-10 at halftime, but UNLV was determined to rally under its quarterback-running back duo of Anthony Colandrea and Jai’Den Thomas. Colandrea finished with 293 passing yards while Thomas ran for 118 on a 9.1 average, consistently generating chunk plays in the second half. After a first half with zero offensive touchdowns, Thomas rushed one in and Colandrea fired a quick slant to his top receiver Jaden Bradley, tying the game at 24-24 by the 7:45 mark of the third quarter.

Suddenly, Miami’s most impressive rally of the day came to fruition, and the RedHawks didn’t even need the offense on the field to execute it. Reynolds fielded the ensuing kickoff from his own end zone and navigated through a sea of white jerseys for a 100-yard house call — Miami’s first kick return touchdown since 2018. Then, less than 90 seconds of action after UNLV’s tying touchdown, the RedHawks made it a 14-point lead. Adam Trick batted Colandrea’s pass at the line of scrimmage into the hands of Hondru. The outside linebacker secured his second pick of the afternoon and seventh in three seasons, finally reaching the end zone while high-fiving Trick right before the goal line.

Hondru, who also produced nine tackles in a stellar showing, put Miami ahead 38-24, but there still remained plenty of clock for Mullen’s team to match. UNLV utilized a 17-play, 8-minute drive, reaching paydirt at the beginning of the fourth quarter on Colandrea’s second passing touchdown. A Miami three-and-out then allowed running back Keyvone Lee to tie the score at 38 apiece with 6:50 remaining.

The RedHawk offense finally got back in gear for its first productive drive of the second half. However, upon reaching the red zone, Marsel McDuffie scooped up a Tracy fumble to dwindle Miami’s win probability in the waning minutes. Capitalizing on the fumble, Colandrea completed two significant passes — a 37-yarder to Jaden Bradley and a 36-yarder to Troy Omeire to position UNLV in field goal range for the win.

The Rebels’ last-second field goal was a history-maker. For the first time ever, UNLV defeated an opponent in the Eastern Time Zone, improving to 1-14 in such contests. UNLV sports one of 30 remaining unblemished records in the FBS and will take its second bye week of the season before facing Wyoming to open Mountain West play.

Meanwhile, Miami is 0-3 for the second consecutive year, but the RedHawks’ don’t traditionally let poor non-conferences start faze them. They rebounded to qualify for the MAC Championship Game and finish with a 9-win season last year. Next Saturday is the perfect opportunity to initiate that turnaround as FCS opponent Lindenwood pays a visit to Yager Stadium.
