  • Aaron Nola moves into second place on Phillies’ all-time strikeout list

Aaron Nola moves into second place on Phillies’ all-time strikeout list

Philadelphia Phillies‘ pitcher Aaron Nola took the mound on Friday in third place on the Phillies’ all-time strikeout list, just four strikeouts behind Robin Roberts.

The veteran pitcher has spent his entire 11-year MLB career in Philadelphia, and further cemented himself in Phillies’ history on Friday night.

Nola delivered eight strong innings, with nine strikeouts against the Minnesota Twins. Nola tied Roberts in the fourth inning with his 1,871st strikeout, and passed Roberts in the fifth inning.

Nola Moves To No. 2 on Phillies’ All-Time Strikeout List

Nola missed a large portion of the 2025 season due to injury, and has only made 17 starts on the year. Although the Phillies’ star has struggled since coming back from injury, that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to climb the strikeout list, and he delivered his best start of the season on Friday night.

Nola has a 6.01 ERA through his 17 starts this season, but has still 97 strikeouts.

The Phillies’ starter passed Cole Hamels earlier this season when he collected his 1,845th strikeout to move into third on the Phillies’ all-time strikeout list, and on Friday night he passed Roberts with his 1,872nd strikeout.

Although Nola has passed both Hamels and Roberts this season, he has some time before he gets even remotely close to the top spot on the list. Steve Carlton holds the most strikeouts in Phillies’ history with 3,031.

With Nola at age 32 and in his 11th year in the MLB, Carlton’s Phillies’ record is pretty safe. Nola has 1,876 career strikeouts and would need over 1,000 more to even get close to Carlton.

As for now, Nola can celebrate the achievement of further endearing himself to Philadelphia fans by moving into second place in franchise history with 1,876 strikeouts.

  • Ryder Cup 2025: Scottie Scheffler facing unwanted Tiger Woods comparison after Bethpage foursomes defeat

Ryder Cup 2025: Scottie Scheffler facing unwanted Tiger Woods comparison after Bethpage foursomes defeat

Of course, Scheffler is far from solely responsible for the foursomes defeats.

His partner Russell Henley did not cover himself in much glory during Friday’s 4&3 beating by European pair Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Henley is fourth in a world ranking system skewed by the omission of LIV golfers, but looked shaky on his Ryder Cup debut.

Even Scheffler – whose game is based on consistent driving and metronomic irons – could not dig them out of trouble.

“Scheffler and Henley certainly failed to fire but the European performance was perfect,” said former European Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson, who is analysing the Bethpage action for BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They made the Americans earn everything and they really couldn’t come up with the goods.

“The Americans put on a little spell at the end there, they had a little bit of life coming but it just wasn’t enough and it was far too late.”

Scheffler was bullish afterwards, saying he felt his pairing did “some good things”.

“We just didn’t hole enough putts early. We had some chances. I think the putts just didn’t fall,” he added.

On Friday afternoon, Scheffler was unable to make amends in the fourballs alongside debutant JJ Spaun as they were beaten 3&2 by Rahm and Sepp Straka.

Again, Scheffler blamed his failings with the putter – the weakest part of his game – for their defeat, although he did rally with a couple of late birdies.

Scheffler and his long-time buddy Henley have been given the chance to instantly redeem themselves in the Saturday foursomes, with US captain Keegan Bradley insisting Scheffler remains in “great spirits”.

Trailing by three points, the hosts are relying on a statement performance from their standout talent.

  • Kane Shatters Ronaldo & Haaland Record, Hits 100 Bayern Goals in Only 104 Games

Kane hits 100 goals as Bayern crush Bremen to extend Bundesliga lead

Kane Shatters Ronaldo & Haaland Record, Hits 100 Bayern Goals in Only 104 Games

Harry Kane scored twice to celebrate his 100th Bayern Munich goal as the Bundesliga champions swept aside Werder Bremen 4 – 0 on Friday night.

The win moved Bayern temporarily clear at the top with 15 point from 5 game.

After early pressure, Bayern broke through in the 22 minute. Michael Olise delivered superb cross from the right and defender Jonathan Tah backheeled the ball into the net for his 1st Bayern goal.

Kane doubled the lead in first half stoppage time, calmly converting penalty after Marco Friedl’s foul.

The England captain struck again in the 65 minute finishing from Luis Diaz’s cut back to hit the century mark in only his 104th game for Bayern.

According to Opta, he’s now the fastest player to reach 100 goal for single club in Europe’s top 5 league, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo & Erling Haaland (105 game).

Kane’s milestone underscores his remarkable impact since joining from Tottenham in 2023.

Beyond his clinical finishing, his movement and link up play created constant problems for Bremen.

The striker left the pitch to standing ovation as Bayern turned focus to Tuesday’s Champions league trip to Pafos.

  • Intensity without reward at Montilivi

Girona and Espanyol drew 0-0 after a thrilling football match filled with strong emotions. The draw prevents Girona from securing their first victory, although the team continues to show increasingly positive signs.

The first half was a true showcase of goalkeeping. Dmitrovic had to stretch to deflect a powerful shot from Iván Martín, and on Girona’s side, Gazzaniga saved a header from Roberto Fernández after a cross from Dolan, who was very active on the right wing. In the 30th minute, Girona’s Argentine goalkeeper once again made a crucial save against Dolan. The feeling was that a goal could come at any moment.

In the second half, Girona came out with more intensity. Vanat had a clear chance after a counterattack initiated by Portu, but Dmitrovic stood tall in goal. The Girona forward almost surprised the Serbian goalkeeper moments later after a mistake in ball distribution, but Urko cleared the danger at the last moment. Míchel’s team took the initiative, but Espanyol responded with very dangerous attacks.

The scoreboard remained unchanged. Victory continues to elude Girona, but the team is showing signs of growth and confidence. Next week, the team will host Valencia at Montilivi.

  • Will RB Bhayshul Tuten play in Week 4 v. 49ers?

Will RB Bhayshul Tuten play in Week 4 v. 49ers?

Will Jaguars’ RB Bhayshul Tuten play in Week 4 vs. the 49ers? Here’s the latest injury update.

Will Jacksonville Jaguars’ running back Bhayshul Tuten be available for the team’s Week 4 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers?

In the first two practices this week, Tuten was limited. On Friday, he was upgraded to a full participant.

This is the second consecutive week that Tuten has been listed with this injury. However, one noteworthy difference from this week compared to last is that Tuten wasn’t wearing a non-contact pinnie this time, according to Mia O’Brien.

Will Jaguars‘ RB Bhayshul Tuten play in Week 4 vs. the 49ers?

Tuten will be available for this game. On the Jaguars’ final injury report, he does not have an injury designation.

Just like last week, although Tuten was limited all three days, he ended up being available on Sunday.

This season, Tuten has carried the ball 17 times and is averaging 4.4 yards per rush with a rushing touchdown. He also has two receptions for 32 yards and a score.

Since Tank Bigsby was traded, Tuten has stepped into the RB2 role behind Travis Etienne. While Etienne handles the bulk of the workload, when Tuten is on the field, there is a concerted effort to get him the ball.

Along with Tuten, the Jaguars also get fellow rookie running back LeQuint Allen involved in more obvious passing situations where he can help out as a blocker or in pass protection.

  • President’s suggestion to take World Cup out of blue cities with crime is rage bait at its finest

President’s suggestion to take World Cup out of blue cities with crime is rage bait at its finest

The 2026 World Cup begins in just over 8 months, and once again the President of the United States has created controversy around the tournament. On Thursday, when prompted by a question about World Cup cities that have higher than average crime rates, President Trump said he would consider moving World Cup games out of Democrat-led cities if he didn’t think they would be safe.

“It will be safe for the World Cup. If I think it isn’t safe, we’ll move it to a different city. Absolutely…it’s actually a very fair question. If I think it’s not safe, we’re going to move it out of that city,” Trump said. Now, there is a lot to unpack, starting with his focus on Chicago and Washington, DC. Neither Chicago nor DC are hosting matches during the World Cup next summer. Washington, DC will host the World Cup draw on December 5th at the Kennedy Center, and that decision was led by Trump himself, which only adds to the confusion surrounding his statements.

However, soundbites like this are done to rile up both his base and his haters, and the theme around it is rage bait. Let’s start with the obvious: no, he cannot unilaterally move World Cup matches from a city, whether it’s due to crime, natural disaster or disdain because they treated him poorly on a visit. The decision to move World Cup matches will rest only with FIFA.

Now, the concern lies around Trump’s close friendship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who has let Trump participate in the Club World Cup trophy presentation and has opened a FIFA office in Trump Tower in New York City. Infantino has allowed Trump unprecedented access and influence that FIFA would normally say is grounds for a federation to be suspended. Whether Infantino would even entertain moving matches from the host venues that have been in full preparations since June 2022, when the final venue list was announced, is unclear, and the FIFA council would likely have to agree. But, with host cities already pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into preparations for the World Cup, they will not sit quietly if the president or FIFA tried to take away some or all of their matches.

What’s clear is this: there are a ton of things that the United States specifically needs to get under control, and one of those is reacting as if everything that is said or stated from the president about the 2026 World Cup is canon. He can say all he wants that he will take matches from “blue” cities and give them to red ones, but of the 33 cities that bid to be a host city in the 2026 World Cup, only 3 are run by independent or “red” mayors, with Miami’s current mayor term limited and exiting office when Miami holds its election in just over a month.

FIFA has stadium requirements, and the main cities that could host multiple World Cup matches on short notice all meet that requirement. There’s also the match schedule, which would have to be drastically altered and then given to TV (especially Fox, who have the American English TV rights to the tournament) to set up the match times. Teams would have to alter their practice and travel logistics if cities were changed, including the USMNT, who have their group stage matches in LA and Seattle. Lawsuits would rain down if anything was drastically changed just because the President doesn’t like the city for whatever reason he sticks with on a particular morning.

What FIFA needs to do is to nip this in the bud. Real leadership should present itself quickly to make this a tournament – to borrow from the Gettysburg Address – of the people, by the people, and for the people. Lower ticket prices are a must and making the ticket process one where everyone has a chance to see a World Cup match near them is vital to build on the boost in interest this World Cup provides. They should be working with their named sponsors for the tournament to lower the cost of travel and accommodations for fans. They should be working with the host cities to ensure they’re forming true legacy projects that will sustain long after the last ball is kicked in this tournament. And, maybe above all, they should be working day and night to ensure that fans and players from around the world are able to smoothly enter the United States (and Canada and Mexico) without fear of reprisal to follow and support their teams and to make this the best World Cup ever.

To do that, FIFA has to step up and quell the rage. It starts at the top. Many fans are resigned to the fact that this World Cup in their backyard isn’t for them, and that isn’t great for future interest in the sport or future World Cups. There may only be 8 months left, but that’s still time to focus on the right things and not billowing the fires of rage bait through the president’s words.

  • Omer Mayer has found his place at Purdue

Omer Mayer has found his place at Purdue

“Don’t worry about anything but being where your feet are…”

Purdue’s offensive coordinator, PJ Thompson, has seen a lot at Purdue. After a full playing career under Matt Painter, Thompson returned to Purdue to coach alongside Painter and eventually take over Purdue’s offense.

He’s been in charge of an offense that lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and that has gotten all the way to the last game of the season. There’s not much about Purdue basketball that Thompson hasn’t seen.

One thing Thompson hasn’t seen though? Someone figure out Purdue’s complicated system right away. That goes for Thompson’s newest toy on offense, Omer Mayer, too. Despite all the polish and skill, Mayer is still learning Purdue’s system, but it appears he’s already found his place on the team.

“I just think he’s in the process of figuring out our system,” Thompson told me after the first official practice media got to witness on Wednesday that included Omer Mayer as a full participant on display to the media for the first time.
Mayer was a late addition in the recruiting process to this Purdue team. The Israel guard shot onto the scene, dominating international play over the summer, and choosing Purdue despite Purdue already having the best point guard in the country on its roster.

That not getting it right away might be one of the biggest challenges for Mayer who comes to Purdue with a unique basketball history. He missed a good portion of the summer because of his international slate where he starred on two different Israel national teams. Before that, Mayer has been playing for a professional basketball team in Tel Aviv the last couple seasons. He’s not used to not dominating on the court.
“European basketball is different than American basketball,” Thompson told me before adding. “But we [Purdue] also differ from American basketball.”
Purdue does not just send fives to the top of the key and play pick and roll. Purdue also doesn’t rely on isolation like many teams around the nation. Instead, Purdue’s DNA is built on similar motion concepts that thrive on European courts.

But more than just being comfortable with Purdue’s playbook, Thompson and Purdue also needs Mayer to adopt a new mindset on the court.

“The biggest thing I tell him is we need him to score the ball,” Thompson said. He went on, “You’re not gonna be a great passer if they don’t guard you.”
Mayer looked to be taking that to heart during Purdue’s competitive drills and five on fives. Mayer was looking for his shot where he’s an elite shooter off the dribble. He’s also shown off his strength at getting to the hoop where he has a variety of moves to leverage his strength and pace at the basket.

Mayer’s passing goes without saying. Still, Mayer’s a target at practice.
Braden Smith was integral in getting Mayer to Purdue. Despite ultimately playing the same position, Smith was involved directly in recruiting Mayer to join Purdue’s program. Mayer was good enough to go to college and find a team that would make him the cornerstone of its offense from the start. Instead, Mayer will fit in next to the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and best point guard in college basketball last season.

Smith took it to Mayer every chance he got on the defensive end. Smith looked unleashed on the defensive end, using his quickness and flurry of hands to make every dribble uncomfortable. He grabbed at Mayer, pressed into him, around, and Mayer looked to revel in the competition.

Mayer’s power at point guard is a fascinating contrast to the blur of Smith. The two colliding together feels like a cold front and a warm front swirling in the sky. Both players play in so much control, but Mayer’s does his with heft and threat, a jump shot that can come from anywhere. For Smith, it’s the lightning first step, the incessant, constant movement and probing that never steps.
Both of them see the entire floor, launching passes before the play even seems to open up. They play at a pace that is entirely their own. Smith was a big reason why Mayer chose Purdue. Smith is now doing his part to pay that faith off by making Mayer better with each rep by not letting up an inch.

Omer Mayer’s life has carried a weight that most on Purdue’s campus can’t imagine. Even on the basketball court, his journey is a unique one for an 18 year old.
“He’s played in Euroleague games,” Thompson said. “He’s been part of war, where he’s at home all day and missiles are flying around.”
West Lafayette is a new setting, a new world, and the adjustment hasn’t been a subtle one, but there’s benefits from being so far from home, too, in a college basketball landscape that’s kinder to teens than pro basketball.
“He’s been amazed that everyone here wants to help,” Thompson said of Mayer. Pro basketball is filled with basketball lifers, professionals, and practices and rosters are dealt with in that capacity. At Purdue, the coaching staff isn’t just a resource for basketball knowledge, but a safe space for teens to expand as people and players.

“We can kinda sit and coddle you a little bit,” Thompson added. “That’s not how pro basketball is. He needed to be loved on a little bit… This change on him has been hard on him mentally because it’s hard.”
Purdue has carved its place in college basketball under Matt Painter. Purdue players have thrived, at Purdue, and after. It was enough to pull a kill from Israel who could have had his choices of places to play. Mayer’s potential is near limitless on a basketball court. In a lot of ways, that’s why Purdue players have chosen Purdue – to be the best form of themselves possible.
But to do that, Mayer first has to settle in living in the present, and to trust in the place he’s put himself.

“Don’t worry about anything but being where your feet are,” Thompson told me he told Mayer this summer. “This place is set up for success. He’s good. He’s learning.”

Mayer seems to already be sure of his choice to join Purdue.
“I’m really excited to be here. I’ve been here for almost two months, I couldn’t ask for a better place for this stage of my career,” Mayer told Field of 68 in an interview a week ago. “I didn’t know I could enjoy basketball as much as I do right here.”

  • 5 Raiders players to watch vs. Bears

5 Raiders players to watch vs. Bears

The Chicago Bears got their first win of the season last weekend, and now they’re hoping to get their first winning streak when they head out to the desert to take on the Las Vegas Raiders. Chicago (1-2) had a rough start to the season but got things rolling in their decisive 31-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday. Las Vegas (1-2) is trending the other way, having lost two in a row after starting the season out 1-0.

Both teams are hoping to get in the win column to climb back to .500 at the proverbial quarter mark of the season to keep pace in the early playoff race. For the Bears, they will need to make sure they watch out for a few key Raiders players while also working to take advantage of others. Here are five Raiders players we’ll be watching when these two teams kick off.

    1. QB Geno Smith

The last time the Bears faced quarterback Geno Smith, it was during one of the worst Thursday Night Football games in recent memory—and that’s saying something. Smith, who was with the Seattle Seahawks, did just enough to lead his squad past the Bears in a 6-3 barnburner. He’s off to a bit more of an explosive start in his first season as a Raider.

Through three games, Smith is second in the league in passing yards with 831, but he’s also tied for second with four interceptions. Reunited with head coach Pete Carroll, Smith can still sling the ball and make plays downfield, though he’s also prone to turnovers when the pressure gets too much in the pocket. Despite the 41-24 blowout loss to the Washington Commanders last week, Smith played well, throwing nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns. The Bears will need him to play more like he did against the Los Angeles Chargers two weeks ago when he tossed three picks to feel good about stealing a win on the road.

    2. RB Ashton Jeanty

For months, Bears fans dreamt about the possibility of landing running back Ashton Jeanty in the 2025 NFL Draft as the missing piece in Johnson’s offense. They never got the chance, as the Raiders selected him No. 6 overall, giving them a dynamic running back option to help move the ball. The only problem is Jeanty has put up pedestrian numbers up to this point.

In three games, Jeanty has averaged just 3.1 yards per carry while being a nonfactor in the passing game. The dazzling runner from Boise State is still looking for his breakout performance at the pro level, and there’s a chance it comes against the Bears. They’re a bottom-10 team when it comes to rushing yards allowed per game (139.3) and are still dealing with injuries across their defense. This could be Jeanty’s coming-out party, and that would spell disaster for Chicago.

    3. TE Brock Bowers

Tight end Brock Bowers is still waiting for his breakout performance of the season as he continues to heal from a knee injury that has slowed him down to start the season. But after being a full participant this week in practice, he could be close to being back to 100%, and that should scare the Bears. Bowers is one of the best young tight ends in the game after he broke multiple rookie records in 2024. As the Raiders’ top receiving threat, Bowers will command a lot of attention from the Bears’ defense.

After a strong Week 1 performance where he totaled over 100 receiving yards, Bowers has just 78 yards in his last two games. Considering his health and what Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson did to the Bears last weekend with a 13-catch, 89-yard outing, this could be a big spot for Bowers to make a lasting impact. Chicago will need to keep him at bay in order to limit the Raiders’ offense.

    4. OT DJ Glaze

We’ve looked at players who could be problems for the Bears on Sunday. How about a player who should provide them with opportunities to get after the quarterback? Right tackle DJ Glaze is off to a horrendous start to the season. Last weekend, he allowed two sacks, four hurries, and six pressures to the Commanders.

Up next, he will face Montez Sweat, the Bears’ top edge rusher, who is starting to get hot at the right time. Sweat notched his first sack last weekend and can take advantage of Glaze with his size and speed. If the Bears are going to get the quarterback on the ground, Sweat will need to win this matchup. Fortunately, it’s one that is in his favor.

    5. DE Maxx Crosby

Death, taxes, and Maxx Crosby being a problem for opposing offensive lines. The four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher continues to wreak havoc for the Raiders and rarely ever leaves the field. Through three games, Crosby has two sacks and four tackles for loss with the opportunity to get more against the Bears this weekend.

While Chicago kept quarterback Caleb Williams upright for the entire game for the first time in his career, it’s not something fans should come to expect. Especially against a player of Crosby’s caliber. Couple that with right tackle Darnell Wright’s elbow injury, and the Bears could be dealing with their own issues on the right side of the line. Whether or not Wright is healthy enough to play or Theo Benedet gets the start, head coach Ben Johnson will certainly prioritize neutralizing Crosby. Sooner or later, though, he’s going to get home.

  • Who is Wanderlei Silva fighting at Spaten Fight Night 2?

Who is Wanderlei Silva fighting at Spaten Fight Night 2?

Belfort was reportedly concussed while training for his “Axe Murderer” rematch, with Spaten docs noting “significant symptoms” and “abnormalities in his imaging studies.” Sounds reasonable; however, Silva’s longtime coach, Andre Dida, suggests the real cause of Belfort’s withdrawal is a chronic case of chickenitis.

“In my opinion, Vitor had to present a medical report, more exams. Not just [say], ‘the doctor said this and that.’ It’s too behind the curtain,” Dida explained to MMA Fighting. ”And show it to the fans. ‘Look, here’s the injury.’ Post it on Instagram. Make people feel your pain.“

“Vitor hasn’t made anyone feel his pain so it’s all too dubious,” Dida continued. “I think Vitor should come out and clarify things for his fans because I don’t believe what was posted. I think he really chickened out, he quit. And it’s not a good look for him. I think Vitor didn’t want it as bad as Wanderlei.”

    “Phenom” out, “Popo” in.

Taking over for Belfort is former WBO super featherweight champion Acelino Freitas, who also held gold in the WBO lightweight division. “Popo” retired with a 41-2 record with 34 knockouts, presenting a dangerous test for “The Axe Murderer,” especially when you consider that Silva has been plagued with CTE symptoms after more than 20 years in the hurt business.

  • Liverpool interested in €50-60m deal for Barcelona man without guaranteed starting role

Barcelona went through another summer without returning to within the bounds of their salary limit, and again struggled to register players. While a large part of that comes down to the removal of their €100m VIP seats lease, it is no small part down to the fact that they have not been able to make any major sales for another summer.

A number of players were linked with an exit, including Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo, Gerard Martin, Marc Casado, Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres, but all of those links were met with the same response: ‘I want to stay at Barcelona’. It meant that Barcelona went without major income, selling for a total of €23m, with Pau Victor, Pablo Torre and Alex Valle all leaving, while they saved on the salaries of Inigo Martinez and Clement Lenglet.

Image via Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images

Now according to The Daily Briefing, Araujo is a name to to ‘keep an eye on’. Liverpool have identified him as a potential option, and feel he could be available for €50-60m next summer. That said, Barcelona are not actively looking to sell him, and the Reds would first have to persuade Araujo himself. He recently penned a new deal until 2031, and this summer was clear that he wants to stay at Barcelona.

    https://x.com/barcacentre/status/1971457896656536038

Araujo was regarded by many as Barcelona’s best defender when he got injured at Copa America in the summer of 2024, keeping him out for five months. When he came back, he found Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi ahead of him in the pecking order, and he struggled to adapt to Hansi Flick’s high pressing system.

This season Araujo has split minutes with Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia alongside Cubarsi, but even with Martinez’s exit, there is no guarantee he will have a starting role this season.
