Auburn DB Kayin Lee ejected for targeting Georgia’s Gunner Stockton

SEC officials called a targeting penalty on the Auburn Tigers late in the first half of the Georgia Bulldogs game. Shortly after a controversial fumble ruling, officials reviewed a Georgia receiver Colbie Young catch and ruled that Auburn defensive back Kayin Lee targeted Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton.

As a result, Auburn was assessed a 15-yard penalty, which helped Georgia scored a field goal to cut Auburn’s lead to 10-3 before halftime. Lee was also ejected, but he will not face a suspension next week because the penalty occurred in the first half.

The targeting penalty helped change the momentum of the game. The Bulldogs used the goal line fumble they forced to keep the game close.

    Kayin Lee’s targeting penalty

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton was a defenseless player on the play and Kayin Lee launched himself into Stockton. Lee made forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless player.

  • LSU already has a deal in place for jersey patches

LSU already has a deal in place for jersey patches

The NCAA could soon approve the placement of ads on football jerseys. One school already has a deal in place.

Via David Rumsey of FrontOfficeSports.com, LSU has a multi-million-dollar sponsorship ready to go, if/when the green light is given to slap logos onto uniforms.

We have signed an agreement,” LSU deputy A.D. and chief revenue officer Clay Harris told Rumsey. “We’ve mapped it out — it’ll be on all of our uniforms, every sport.”

Other schools will surely follow suit. And it seems inevitable that the measure will be approved. Because colleges need to generate as many revenue streams as they can, now that some of the donor cash that previously went to the programs is now going to fund NIL payments.

Once that bridge has been crossed — and after fans complain about it before accepting it — the could give the NFL cover to put ads on their game jerseys, too.

  • No. 16 Notre Dame pulls away from NC State in second half for fourth consecutive win

No. 16 Notre Dame pulls away from NC State in second half for fourth consecutive win

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — C.J. Carr passed for 342 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 16 Notre Dame pulled away from N.C. State in the second half for a 36-7 victory on Saturday.

Carr connected on 19 of 31 passes, including TD tosses of 18 yards to K.K. Smith and 12 yards to Will Pauling in the third quarter.

Jeremiyah Love rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns for Notre Dame (4-2), which has won four in a row.

Notre Dame led 10-7 at halftime. The Fighting Irish outscored the Wolfpack 26-0 in the second half.

C.J. Bailey connected with Terrell Anderson on a 45-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter for the Wolfpack (4-3).

Notre Dame came up with three interceptions and hit the Wolfpack for four sacks, five tackles for loss and a safety. N.C. State entered the game averaging 447.7 yards of total offense a game, but only managed 233 yards on Saturday.

    The Takeaway

Notre Dame’s fourth consecutive victory should help the No. 16 Fighting Irish continue to inch their way up the rankings.

N.C. State has lost three of its last four, including setbacks against Duke and Virginia Tech before Saturday’s game at Notre Dame. A 56-10 victory over Campbell is the only bright spot for the Wolfpack in the past month.

    Up Next

N.C. State plays at Pittsburgh on Oct. 25. Notre Dame plays Southern California at home next Saturday.

  • Northwestern put a huge dagger in Penn State’s season

Northwestern put a huge dagger in Penn State’s season

Penn State is going through it right now, as things have gone from bad to worse for James Franklin’s team over the last three weeks. National championship aspirations often aren’t destroyed this early in the season, but it’s looking bleak for a three-loss Nittany Lions team that was a preseason favorite to win it all.

After easily winning their season-opening cupcake games, the Nittany Lions are now 3-3 and on a three-game losing streak, falling to Oregon, UCLA and, most recently, Northwestern. At home in Happy Valley on Saturday, Penn State had a slim lead for much of the game, but the Wildcats posted a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter and held on for a 22-21 victory.

With the upset, Northwestern just put a huge dagger in the Nittany Lions’ season.

The double-overtime loss to the Ducks was hardly going to ruin Penn State’s season, but losing to a previously winless Bruins team that fired its coach before the end of September and a previously two-win Wildcats squad — one of the wins was against UCLA — is bad for so many reasons.

The Nittany Lions have been staples near the top of the Big Ten standings but haven’t won since 2016. And while they’re often playoff and national championship contenders, Franklin infamously — and rightfully — has a reputation for not being able to win big games.

Turns out, his 2025 squad is struggling against mediocre-at-best teams, and fans are furious. (Warning: There are some NSFW gestures in the video below.)

This Penn State team was expected to be among Franklin’s best, if not THE best, with veteran quarterback Drew Allar leading the offense and a defense that was supposed to be elite. On paper, the Nittany Lions’ roster is stacked. (Allar suffered a season-ending injury against Northwestern, Franklin said after the game.)

Now, not only does Penn State have three losses, but it remains winless in the Big Ten and in the bottom half of the conference standings. That’s a tremendous amount of ground to attempt to make up in the next few weeks — maybe even an insurmountable amount — and an 0-3 conference start almost ensures the Nittany Lions won’t be returning to the conference championship game.

Nationally, a three-loss team making the 12-team College Football Playoff isn’t unprecedented, but last season when Clemson made it with three losses, the Tigers were ACC champions and guaranteed a playoff spot.

With time to improve still, nothing is for sure, of course, and especially not in college football. But Penn State is in a pretty dismal spot right now.

Stanford CB Aaron Morris cleared after scary hit, leaving loss to SMU early in an ambulance

Stanford cornerback Aaron Morris is OK after a scary incident that resulted in him being immobilized and taken off the field in a stretcher during the Cardinal’s matchup with SMU on Saturday.

Morris went down in the first quarter of Stanford’s 34-10 loss to SMU at Gerald Ford Stadium when he was trying to cover a deep pass down the sidelines from Mustangs quarterback Keivn Jennings. Morris and linebacker Sam Mattingly tried to tackle wide receiver Jordan Hudson, but Morris went down awkwardly after a big hit.

He remained down on the field for quite some time. His facemask was removed and he was immobilized, placed on a stretcher and taken off the field in an ambulance. He was moving his arms and legs at the time, a Stanford spokesperson said at the time. The program then announced during the second half that Morris was on his way back from the hospital to rejoin the team.

“Aaron Morris has cleared all precautionary tests and is returning to be with the team for the conclusion of the SMU matchup,” the .

Morris is in his third year at Stanford this fall. He entered Saturday’s game with five total tackles. Further specifics on his injury or how long he’ll be sidelined, if at all, are not yet known.

  • Packers sign kicker Lucas Havrisik to their active roster in case McManus is unable to play

Packers sign kicker Lucas Havrisik to their active roster in case McManus is unable to play

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have signed kicker Lucas Havrisik to their active roster to give themselves a contingency plan in case Brandon McManus’ quadriceps injury prevents him from playing Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Green Bay (2-1-1) released an injury report Friday that listed McManus as questionable. Packers coach Matt LaFleur called the situation a “major concern” on Thursday, though McManus took issue with that remark and said he planned on playing against Cincinnati (2-3).

“He didn’t speak to me about that, so he has his own thesaurus, encyclopedia to describe injuries,” McManus said Thursday.

LaFleur was asked about the injury again Friday.

“I’ve got to check my thesaurus, apparently,” LaFleur quipped. “But any time a kicker — I don’t care, that’s what I was trying to tell him — yeah, you’ve dealt with this. Well, we haven’t, and I haven’t in my experience. If you’re a kicker and your leg is bothering you, that’s a problem. It’s no different than a quarterback that has something with their throwing arm or throwing shoulder. That is a concern. Whether or not you can work yourself through it, time will tell.”

McManus hurt his quad in practice on Wednesday and was limited in practice the rest of the week.

“I had kickoffs earlier in the day and then I was warming up for field goals, I kind of felt a tug against my quad,” McManus said. “I gave it a couple minutes, tried again and I just shut it down for the day. I didn’t want to make it worse.”

The 26-year-old Havrisik appeared in nine games with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 and went 15 of 20 on field-goal attempts and 19 of 22 on extra points. He has been part of the practice squads for the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills.

He played 10 games for the United Football League’s Dallas Renegades earlier this year and went 22 of 25 on field-goal attempts.

In other moves Sunday, the Packers signed offensive tackle Brant Banks to the practice squad and released defensive lineman Deslin Alexandre from the practice squad.

Banks appeared in two games with the Packers earlier this season. The Tennessee Titans claimed him off waivers on Oct. 1 but released him eight days later.

  • Bears’ Ben Johnson announces major change to Caleb Williams’ blindside protection

Bears’ Ben Johnson announces major change to Caleb Williams’ blindside protection

The Chicago Bears are coming out of their early Week 5 bye and face the Washington Commanders for their rematch from 2024’s Hail Mary loss.

While the Bears are looking like a much better team under new head coach Ben Johnson through the early part of the season, there is still plenty of improvement to be made. And ahead of their Week 6 matchup, the Bears are already making a significant change.

According to Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com, Ben Johnson announced that the Bears are making a change to their blindside protection for Caleb Williams, replacing Braxton Jones at left tackle with undrafted free agent Theo Benedet.

Bears announce left tackle change for Week 6

“Theo Benedet will replace Braxton Jones at left tackle, coach Ben Johnson announced on Saturday.” Cronin writes, “It will be the second straight start for Benedet, the former undrafted free agent who is in his second season with Chicago.”

This move comes following the Bears’ bye week, and right before their Week 6 rematch against the Commanders and Jayden Daniels. Benedet has been in Chicago for two years now, but is finally getting a chance to start along the offensive line this season.

An undrafted free agent out of British Columbia in Canada, Benedet is getting his second straight start in the NFL after filling in for Darnell Wright against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4.

MoreBears QB Caleb Williams’ draws candid take after beating Raiders

In his first NFL start, he allowed three pressures according to PFF, and also had a poor 36.6 pass blocking grade. While he played 28 snaps at right tackle and 40 at left tackle, Benedet is now slated to start at left tackle full-time for the Bears in Week 6.

Jones, this season, has allowed a team-high 15 pressures according to PFF, and has also allowed two sacks, the most on the team. The former fifth-rounder, who’s started for the Bears since being drafted in 2022, is seeing his starting job taken by Benedet coming out of the bye week.

Williams is getting a new blindside protector, as the Bears are reshuffling their offensive line just five games into the regular season.

The Bears are shaking things up with this move, hoping to find better pass protection for their franchise quarterback as they look to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
